Pay rate for this role is $84,000 - $90,000 annually, depending on experience. The hygienist will also be expected to aid in maintaining dental instruments, equipment, and operatories when needed. Qualifications and abilities Successful completion of a dental hygiene associates degree or higher from an institution accredited by the American Dental Association. Current State of Hawaii Dental Hygiene license required as well as the current continuing education requirements to maintain licensure. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, community members, and staff members. Proficient in computer skills: typing, navigating through the internet and emails. OSHA training. CPR certified. General Duties include but are not limited to Performs oral prophylaxis by removing calculus, plaque, and staining from teeth by using an ultrasonic cleaner and hand instruments. Performs safe delivery of local anesthesia. Measures periodontal probing depths and complete periodontal charting. Completes and follows up on patient referral forms. Apply preventative materials to teeth such as fluoride and sealants as indicated. Educates patients on proper oral hygiene home care as well as answers any questions pertaining to oral health. Counsel patients on nutrition habits that promote optimum oral health. Document treatment, procedures, and education that is performed. Organizes and maintains supplies in the operatories and in the Dental Clinic Maintains a sterile and neat working environment according to current infection control procedures. Under the general supervision of a qualified dentist, the hygienist is responsible for assessing patient needs to enhance and maintain the periodontal status utilizing established dental hygiene protocols and procedures. This includes the taking of radiographs, medical/dental health assessments, scaling and rooting planning, patient education, preventive clinical services such as sealant and fluoride varnish application, health promotion activities, and the maintenance of an active patient recall system. Hygienist are also the primary educators of the dental team and as such are expected to keep current with oral health trends, be competent in speaking before audiences, and developing educational material for ages 1 year old to adults. Positions are for full time salaried employment, but the expectation is that providers may put in over 40 hours per week performing clinical, program, and recordkeeping functions. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, patient access is a primary consideration influencing individual work schedules and productivity/ patient encounter expectations. Hygienists are expected to function as part of the dental team that enhances the expeditious flow of patients through their appointment while maximizing the workflow efficiency of the dentist. Clinics are open Monday - Saturday, are staffed by multiple dentists, and assignments may include working at multiple locations during the work day. The Center is also a dental residency site and some supervision and mentoring can be expected. Allocation of time between patient care, outreach programs, and dental residency supervision is determined by the Dental Director. An aspect of the outreach program is working at the dental trailer at Kamaile school and the dental mobile van that visits local schools and sites to treat patients. Outreach events occur outside of work hours and the schedule of the hygienist may be modified to attend these events. The position dedicates over 90% of the time to performing chair side dental assisting duties with occasional administrative and operational support in the absence of auxiliary supervisory staff. The position dedicates over 90% of the time to performing chair side dental assisting duties with occasional administrative and operational support in the absence of auxiliary supervisory staff. Strong interpersonal skills are required to assist in the day to day management of clinical personnel in the absence of the Office Manager or other higher level supervisory personnel. Familiarity with organization and department protocols and procedures, dental materials and supplies, and an above average level of technical chair side competence are a must. The position also requires the ability to assess changing departmental conditions /resources and to be able to initiate actions which assure that patient care and operational demands are addressed in a timely manner. Community outreach position requires performing assignments related to supporting offsite projects. Strong organizational skills are required to accurately and religiously maintain inventory and program records; develop, coordinate, and update schedules; and plan activities. Communication and computer skills will be useful to develop audience appropriate materials and conduct presentations before large groups when requested by the Dental Director. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 1. Minimum two year full time experience as a clinical assistant 2. High school diploma or equivalent 3. Work behavior (in- house applicants) that demonstrates clinical proficiency, team/leadership support, and responsible job performance may be substituted for one year of experience (Approval by Dental Director required) 4.
