ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides direct patient care to children and adults within approved in approved RDH duties by California Code of Regulations a primary care setting.

Performs patient screening procedures such as assessment of oral health condition, review of the health history, oral cancer screening, head and neck evaluation, dental charting, and patient vitals.
3.
Assesses patients' teeth, bone, and periodontal tissues indicating the presence of any abnormalities or suspected diseases or conditions and notifies dentist.
4.
Assists the dentist with developing and completing appropriate periodontal treatment plans.
5.
Serves as a member of the care team, engaging in routine and preventive dental care.
6.
Instructs patients how to practice good oral hygiene; makes recommendations as to appropriate products or devices for patients' home care; and provides other health care education such as nutritional counseling and motivational interviewing, as necessary.
7.
Thoroughly removes soft and hard deposits and extrinsic stains from teeth using hand instruments, ultrasonic inserts, and hand pieces.
8.
Performs full mouth debridement, either as a first stage gingivitis therapy or to remove interfering calculus to further enable a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
9.
Provides local anesthesia as needed for treatment procedures.
10.
Irrigates sub-gingivally with an antimicrobial and/or antibiotic liquid solution
11.
Applies preventive agents such as fluoride and sealants to the tooth surfaces and assists the dentist, as required, in further treatment of teeth and gums.
12.
Takes digital x-rays and intra-oral photos of patients.
13.
Maintains patient electronic medical records with thorough documentation practices.
14.
Performs instrument maintenance, including sharpening of hand scalers.

General Expectations
· Arrive and be prepared to work at the scheduled time.
· Personal phones should be put away until break or lunchtime.

Development

Clinical Expectations
· Maintain familiarity with dental instruments, treatment supplies, and their locations to prepare treatment rooms for the appropriately prescribed treatment.
· Apply prescribed topical medications to the gingival tissue, perform coronal polish, and apply fluoride varnish on patients after prophylaxis.
· Educate patients by giving oral hygiene, plaque control, and postoperative instructions and provide nutritional counseling when necessary. Develop and conduct an educational preventative oral health care program for patients. Conduct classes in oral hygiene instruction for staff dental assistants.
· Make preliminary impressions for denture fabrications.
· Administer drugs to patients according to the dentist prescription (when appropriate).
· Take vital signs if necessary.
· Perform dental screenings when needed, schedule appointments and make referrals for other medical and mental health care.
· Conduct, develop, mount, and label all x-ray films, while following dental radiography and film processing mandates and regulations. Disinfect x-ray head and tube after each use and wear a dosimeter badge in accordance with policies and procedures.
· Comply with DBC and dental infection control regulations and policies. Minimize and immediately report any occupational exposure. Use personal protective equipment in the oral healthcare setting, including the appropriate use of gloves, surgical masks, protective eyewear, face shields, and protective clothing.
· When appropriate, perform procedures such as periodontal soft tissue curettage, administration of local anesthetic agents in the oral cavity and placement of antimicrobial or antibiotic medicaments which do not require later removal.
· Supervise patients in the dental care delivery area and self-care presentation areas. Assist the Dentist in treating a dental emergency.
· Perform other duties as required.
Documentation and Communication
· Maintain patient confidentiality.
· Communicate effectively with patients of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
· Document in EHR each treatment performed; closeout and complete Dental Sick Call (dental treatment).
· Complete refusals, consent forms, and other documents with all pertinent patient information. Write diagnosis and treatment on the refusal/consent forms. Leave documents to be scanned in the designated location and shred documents with personal health information when appropriate.
· Maintain accurate records. Thoroughly train new RDA on EHR.
· Print and fax soft diet to kitchen when needed and place paper copy in the appropriate location.
· Scan and send timecards as appropriate. Send paper copies via interoffice mail to 58-001A, Attn: Acct.
· Use Vixwin to input patient's name, XREF, birthdate and gender into the dental software and take X-rays.
Daily Work Expectations
· Turn on/off the lights, ”compressor” (Use Key D22 for Door NMJ), autoclave, x-ray, and computer.
· Set up basic trays (patient napkin/2x2/snap-a-ray/topical).
· Set up ultrasonic with 2 tabs (Maxime Tabs) located in sterilization room cabinet #1.
· Set up waterline solution (OR-Evac) located under sink in sterilization room cabinet #3.
· Conduct Spore check test once a week on Mondays. Initial and date. Send via Interoffice mail to 58-001A Admin. If absent on Monday, complete the next day. To order tests, call the ACH Accounting Technician.
· Count instruments; date, sign and initial in the Dental Inventory logbook (AM and PM) verifying all instruments are present. Instruments are color coded per room at MJ: Room 1 (Purple) and 2 (Yellow). At R3C, count all instruments and needles. Follow instructions on the correct way to bag dental tools.
· Restock supplies in between patients.
· Maintain dental supplies inventory by checking stock, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders before supplies run out, and verifying receipt of supplies.
· Ensure operation of dental equipment: Follow manufacturer's instructions, complete preventive maintenance, troubleshoot malfunctions, call for repairs, maintain equipment inventories, and evaluate new equipment and techniques.
· Deliver instruments to the treatment area and position instruments for dentist's access. Assist with suctioning and passing instruments.
Cleaning and Sanitizing
· Prepare the dental chair for next patient with disinfectant and new bag cover over the chair.
· Clean all surfaces with disinfectants; flush dental operatory water lines; and count, process (presoak, clean, decontaminate, rinse, dry, bag, wrap or package and date), sterilize and properly store all dental instruments, tools and hand pieces (lubricate hand pieces before and after sterilization), ensuring the correct number of instruments are in each pouch.
· Empty biohazard sharps and biohazard waste when full. MJ: Biohazard discarding is located in the hall near the deputy desk. Use Key 18 to unlock or ask a Deputy.
· Empty trash cans and replace garbage bags.
· Keep area clean and tidy. Maintain safe and clean working environment at all times by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Report any workplace hazards to immediate supervisor.
· At the end of the day restock all supplies, lock all cabinets, return both sets of keys, sweep and mop.
