In this role, we are seeking a Clinical Laboratory Scientist II to join our growing team! You will be responsible for preparing specimens and conducting clinical laboratory procedures, ranging from waived to high complexity, while ensuring strict adherence to regulatory guidelines such as SOPs, FACT, AABB, ACHI, CAP, FDA, and Joint Commission standards. This position offers a sign-on bonus and presents an excellent opportunity for skilled professionals in the field.
This is an Evening shift position; 02:00pm - 10:30pm (hours may vary); initial training hours may be conducted during day shift hours.
Additional Note: This position requires flexibility to accommodate varying patient needs. Shifts may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. On-call responsibilities and mandatory overtime may also be necessary.
As a successful candidate, you will:
* Perform a variety of complex laboratory tests and procedures according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules. Completes procedures within established turnaround times
* Perform quality control procedures including preventive maintenance, calibrations, review of controls, and records data on appropriate forms. Support and participate in the Quality Assurance efforts and Performance Improvement process.
* Utilize standard laboratory equipment, and records and checks result for completeness and accuracy. Performs data entry of diagnostic information.
* EPIC Beaker experience (highly preferred)

Job/Department Summary:
Working under the supervision of a physician laboratory director or higher-level Clinical Laboratory Scientist, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist I (CLS I) is a licensed professional responsible for performing a wide variety of moderate to highly complex clinical laboratory tests and examinations. The CLS I provides medical staff with essential laboratory data for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and disease within the university setting. Operating as a member of the Biological Sciences Department, the SJSU CLS Training Program is the largest CLS Training Program in the State of California. Brief Description of Duties
Teach CLS Students Advanced Medical Microbiology, Transfusion, Blood Banking, Hematology, Molecular Biology, Laboratory Management, or Clinical Chemistry and includes 12 separate lectures with associated assignments and exams.
Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity-including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation-through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).
Required Qualifications
CLS Generalist License or CLS Limited License or MLS Certification or MD.
Master's Degree or PhD or three years of teaching experience.
Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
Preferred Qualifications
3 years of full-time work experience in a clinical laboratory that is directly relevant to the CLS profession.
Compensation
Salary range placement is determined by qualifications and experience. Commensurate with experience within ranks established by the CSU Salary Schedule for Special Sessions or at the Director's discretion.
The rates shown below by range are the anticipated salary from the applicable Faculty Salary Schedule - 2322 to be paid per WTU in Special Session programs (a typical course is 3 WTUs). As the salary schedule indicates, compensation may be reduced if enrollment targets are not met.

Position Information

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Laboratory Technician I: This is the entry-level classification in the Laboratory Technician series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic experience learn City systems, operations, practices, and procedures. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Assignments may vary with the skill and training of the incumbent. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II-level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.
Laboratory Technician II: This is the journey-level classification in the Laboratory Technician series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the I-level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Must possess mobility to work in standard office and laboratory settings and use standard office and laboratory equipment, including a computer, and to operate a motor vehicle to visit various City and meeting sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Standing in and walking between work areas is frequently required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office and laboratory equipment. The roles and responsibilities for Disaster Service Workers are authorized by the California Emergency Services Act and are defined in the California Labor Code. Effective July 1, 2025, in accordance with the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented. PLP 2025 requires each full-time employee in Bargaining Unit 11, and related Excluded, Exempt and Statutory Exempt employees, will have their base salary reduced by 3 percent and will receive 5 hours PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 2027. Under the supervision of the Correctional Health Services Administrator I/II, Correctional Facility (CF), the Laboratory Assistant, CF performs standardized non-technical laboratory procedures in collecting and processing laboratory specimens, materials, and supplies. Assists in operating specialized laboratory equipment; complies with all the applicable State and federal laws and regulations and departmental policies and procedures pertaining to the laboratory. Maintains order, supervises the conduct of the incarcerated, and protects and maintains the safety of persons and property.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I:
Six months of experience in laboratory work similar to that described in Definition of Levels above.
Or II:
Education: Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade.
Or III:
Satisfactory completion of a formalized laboratory work experience and training program of at least three months' duration, such as those conducted under Job Training Partnership Act, or similar work experience programs conducted by State agencies.
