We are seeking a detail-oriented and technically strong Project Engineer to support operations within our Fabrication Shop, working closely with production teams, quality control personnel, designers, and project management to ensure that all fabricated materials meet project specifications and schedule requirements.
Position Overview
The Project Engineer - Fabrication Shop will coordinate, track, and support the fabrication of structural steel and related components for major bridge and heavy civil projects. This role ensures engineering compliance, quality, efficient workflow, and timely delivery of fabricated materials from the shop to the field. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of steel fabrication processes, welding, quality control, and engineering documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical Coordination
• Review fabrication drawings, shop details, weld maps, and specifications for accuracy and constructability.
• Support the development of shop drawings, revisions, and material takeoffs, coordinating with designers, detailers, and project engineers.
• Verify engineering requirements including material grades, weld procedures, tolerances, and fit-up conditions.
• Assist in resolving technical issues during fabrication, working with engineering teams and field personnel.
Production & Workflow Management
• Develop fabrication sequences and work packages to support production planning.
• Coordinate material flow, cutting schedules, welding operations, and assembly workstations.
• Monitor fabrication progress, production rates, and bottlenecks, ensuring adherence to project schedules.
• Maintain status logs for all fabricated components and assemblies.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
• Ensure compliance with AWS welding standards, AISC requirements, project specifications, and internal QC programs.
• Participate in inspections, NDT coordination (UT, MT, RT), and documentation of welds and materials.
• Review mill certifications, heat numbers, and material traceability throughout the production process.
• Support corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives in the shop.
Documentation & Reporting
• Maintain fabrication reports, production metrics, weld maps, and inspection records.
• Support RFI development, submittal management, change documentation, and communication with project teams.
• Prepare progress updates and assist with shipping lists, loadout plans, and logistics coordination.
Safety & Shop Operations
• Promote and uphold our safety culture in all fabrication activities.
• Support Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), equipment safety protocols, and housekeeping standards.
• Participate in shop meetings, safety audits, and improvement initiatives.
Qualifications Required
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Welding Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline.
• 2-5+ years of experience in steel fabrication, structural engineering, or heavy civil construction.
• Strong understanding of steel fabrication processes, welding procedures, and quality standards (AWS, AISC).
• Ability to interpret structural drawings, shop details, weld symbols, and fabrication documentation.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office; experience with fabrication management software is a plus.

JOB SUMMARY
The successful candidate will be responsible for applying Southern Company's engineering processes, design criteria, and software applications in the design and construction support of high-voltage transmission lines (HVTL). This design process may include, but is not limited to, the following: pole/structure location and material selection, wire tension determination, pole/structure framing selection, structural analysis of poles/structures and associated hardware, foundation coordination, environmental impact mitigation, calculation of required NESC electrical clearances, and constructability and maintenance optimization based on feedback from stakeholders. Extensive on-the-job training will be provided to teach the successful candidate the necessary skills. The successful candidate will also be expected to attend and travel to formal training provided by the company. The successful candidate, under direct supervision, will follow prescribed procedures to develop design options, prepare construction specifications and drawings, and support estimate preparation for projects. These design packages will be used to construct new transmission lines and update existing transmission lines, enhancing the Southern Company grid. These enhancements could include serving new customers such as data centers, manufacturers, battery plants, etc., and/or connecting renewable generation plants (solar) to the system. This position may be filled at a grade level commensurate with the successful candidate's experience.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Create a safe work environment through total personal commitment to putting Safety First.
Become knowledgeable in the use of PLS-CADD software to model new and existing high voltage transmission lines (HVTL), in a 3D environment (identify pole/structure/guy wire locations, install conductors and shield-wires, analyze structural strengths, analyze electrical clearances of wires to ground and other objects).
Provide transmission line design solutions utilizing principles of statics, structural analysis, and mechanics of materials.
Learn and apply an understanding of the National Electric Safety Code, land surveying, easements, current, voltage, conductor ampacity, electrical clearances, thermal properties of electrical conductors, and other aspects of transmission line engineering.
Create construction specifications, documentation, and drawings to aid line crews in the construction and maintenance of HVTL.
Update cost estimates and support material ordering for transmission line projects.
Provide engineering support to construction and maintenance teams during day-to-day operations as well as emergency restoration of failed equipment.
Become knowledgeable of the process used at Southern Company in the planning, design, operation, construction, and maintenance of HVTL.
Become knowledgeable of the functions and activities of the various internal departments that are involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of HVTL.
Become proficient in the use of all software applications used in the design of HVTL.
Support the development of design standards and criteria for use on the Southern Company transmission system.
Serve as a damage assessment team member after major storms - this will require overnight travel within the Southern Company system.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education

A Brief Summary of This Position:
This is an individual contributor position in the Lighting and Transportation division. The incumbent reads and interprets customer order information. This position processes orders for production and customer submittal drawings, consistent with Valmont standard practices, in the moderate to high range of complexity, and prepares the necessary drawings and other data for the teams, other departments and the manufacturing facilities, as well as interfaces, with direction from the Site Drafting Manager/Drafting Supervisor, directly with other company departments on customer order and manufacturing problems. Customer contact may be required to aid the design/order process.
The Drafting Department is responsible for processing drawings for customers and the manufacturing facilities while maintaining the company objectives for quality and lead-time. This Individual Contributor role must interact with people in all departments in order to maintain amiable and profitable relationships in inter-departmental communication.
The incumbent will, with required supervision, read and interpret customer specifications, plans and other order information to determine the format required to complete customer orders. He/she will be responsible for reporting any inconsistent, conflicting or missing customer information to the Drafting Supervisor or a Senior Design Drafter.
The incumbent shall have knowledge of departmental and company goals, policies and procedures and the product lines represented. Deviations from these shall be minimal and only when beneficial to the department, division and company.
This position is important to the results of the department and the division. The incumbent is allowed to establish work routines and/or schedules, within company policies, in order to maintain efficient order flow. He/she may identify, recommend and help develop revisions to standard product designs, drafting procedures and systems to improve the department and the division.

Serve as the first line of defense for electrical, firmware, and functional issues on the drive module manufacturing assembly, including software, firmware, harnessing, networking (CAN, LIN, Automotive & Standard Ethernet, GMSL), hardware, and infrastructure.
Troubleshoot and resolve electrical and firmware issues at the manufacturing supplier (e.g., flashing firmware, updating test sequences, repairing harness connectors, terminals, and wires).
Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to interpret component- and vehicle-level requirements and translate them into scalable, system-level validation test scripts and cases.7
Develop work instructions, troubleshooting guides, and workaround documentation for operators on the manufacturing line.
Design and implement next-generation diagnostic architectures to support higher-volume production in future manufacturing lines.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a relevant area such as Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.
Very strong troubleshooting and debugging skills and experience, including reading, troubleshooting, and injecting packets over various network protocols such as CAN, LIN, and Ethernet.
2-4 years of experience with automotive controller integration testing or test script development / programming in high-level languages such as Python Experience with Github or similar tools for software management
Strong background in Linux and shell / bash / terminal scripting
Master's degree in a relevant area such as Computer Science or Engineering Experience with integration and automation of manufacturing and test equipment
Background in creating, reading, and writing to tables in SQL database
Experience with computer network engineering, TCP / IP protocols, communication over API

Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university or equivalent
10 years of prior experience in nuclear or power generation design of mechanical systems

Nuclear Engineering Change qualifications from any site that can be transferred are preferred
10CFR50.59 Screen and / or Evaluation qualifications that can be transferred are preferred
