Designer/estimator job description

Wachter, Inc. is currently seeking a Physical Design and Estimator in Mount Laurel, NJ. This role is responsible for pre-sales support, system design, drafting bill of materials, requesting distributor quotes, organizing pricing of equipment and applying standard labor components to bids which shall include the following disciplines: Physical Security (IP Video Surveillance, Access Control) and Network Engineering a plus (switch/route wireless). An incumbent in this position will also assist with pre-sales opportunities by working with sales engineers to draft proposals. Ideal candidates should be comfortable to act as a Technical resource for discovery and information gathering for physical security on client calls, possess the ability to work with MS Word and Excel, and be able to determine if additional information is needed to develop a solution that meets the customer requirements. Other experience includes strong knowledge of voltage limitations and lock types, and a good understanding of Video surveillance (pixels per foot) and how to calculate retention time.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist the Systems Engineering and Sales Depts. to develop technical Solutions that meet customer requirements. Maintain current knowledge of the equipment and technologies he/she supports by attending training provided by the manufacturer The ability to read and understand RFPs, technical drawings and technical requirements for IT focused projects.A good methodical approach to tasks, ability and interests to learn new technologies.Will be required to continue to learn new physical security solutions (Video surveillance and access control) and as a plus an understanding of electrical limitations with respect to physical security.Self-motivated, able to meet deadlines and maintain quality of work under pressure.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: High School diploma is required. Vendor specific certifications from manufacturers such as Milestone Systems, S2, Axis Cameras and/or Lenel are required (E.G.: MCIT, Axis Certified, (CCNA and CCNP a plus)). 2 or 4 year college degree in Computer Sciences, Electrical Engineering or MIS a plus. A minimum of 1 to 3 years of experience is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:Proficient written and verbal English communication skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical journals. Ability to effectively present technical information to prospects and existing customers, peer employees and managers. Experience in technical and Proposal writing is a plus with an understanding professional client facing documents.

NETWORKING SKILLS:Ability to understand an IP address, subnet mask and gateway address information. Knowledge of components within networking (data switch, router and firewall). A plus to understand network security components and architecture. A plus to understanding of wireless communications (802.11G,N,AC).

ELECTRICAL SKILLS:Should understand POE requirements for standards 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt with relation to video surveillance cameras and access control equipment (calculation of POE budgets). Ability to understand voltage requirements, relay connections and door locking hardware electrical operation a plus.

REASONING ABILITY:Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Looking for a motivated candidate to join the Eversource Gas Work Prep and Estimating team in Massachusetts. This individual would be responsible for the development of standard design gas projects including pipe of 12” diameter or less, operating at 99 psig. or less. These designs may include but are not limited to: main and service replacement projects, effected cast iron mains and encroachments, new business gas projects, new gas services, and standard
commercial/industrial
meter sets. Responsible for developing estimates and work orders for capital projects within the Gas Organization.
Essential Functions:
Identifies requirements and design specifications for new and existing gas facilities.Estimates costs of materials, labor, contractor services and equipment for underground utility construction projects.Orders materials, when required, for assigned projects.Prepares project documents and related work orders in the Maximo work management system.Designs gas service replacements for all projects.Evaluates and documents historical cost data for the development of future estimates.Prepares and reviews final estimate packages to ensure accuracy and completeness.Initiates project financial approval for assigned projects.Performs analysis of estimated vs. actual costs and units for completed projects.Responsible for the timely redesigns of existing work packages to support field changes when applicable.Prepares work order summary sheets for internal construction and meter services departments.Must be capable of interpreting contract language and contract units used to produce accurate estimates.May perform site visits on a limited basis to inspect and document existing field conditions.

Qualifications:
Knowledge of gas distribution operations or underground utility construction including engineering, construction and maintenance practices, as well as Federal, State, and company codes and regulations. Knowledge of estimating best practices including basic calculations based on project scope.Strong Computer skills MS Office (strong knowledge of Excel), Primavera P6, PowerBI, GIS, work management system (preferred).Demonstrated ability to improve processes and create efficiencies.Ability to read and understand contract documents, drawings and specifications.Ability to manage multiple projects.Knowledge of Work Management and budget systems.Knowledge of "unit based" estimating is preferred

Education:
Bachelor's Degree in construction management, engineering or related discipline OR equivalent experience (preferred)

Experience:
Three plus years of directly related experience

Licenses & Certifications: (not required)
ASPE, ICEAA, or AACE estimator certification preferred.

Working Conditions:
Employee could be eligible for a hybrid work from home schedule.Work is performed primarily in an office environment which involves sitting, standing and general movement throughout the office area. Job can require driving to different geographic locations to visit field sites or attend meetings as necessary.Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.This position is categorized as safety-sensitive for the purpose of drug testing.
