As a member of our Infrastructure and Services Group, you would contribute to CDM Smith's mission by:
- Designing systems ranging from basic to highly complex to meet client needs. Job Responsibilities:
As an Industrial Design Co-op, you will work under the guidance of Industrial Designers to conceptualize and develop new and innovative products and solutions. Tasks may include:
* Research - Research and document user needs, product requirements, competitive products and industry trends. Conduct field research of users and products, including onsite observations, interviews, filming and task analysis. Follow-up with field research after product introduction.
* Conceptual Design - Conceptualize new and innovative products and solutions, including creating aspects of form, aesthetics and physical/psychological interactions between users and products. Create sketches, renderings and models as necessary to convey design intent. Create layouts and test bucks as necessary to resolve basic user ergonomics. Determine material, construction, mechanisms, shape, color, surface finish and manufacturing processes in cooperation with Engineering and Manufacturing. Communicate design solutions to management and other team members.
* Design Development & Support - Create 3-dimensional CAD models of appearance parts. Validate surface geometry with rapid prototype samples. Collaborate with Engineering and Manufacturing to ensure that manufacturability requirements are met. Assist with product graphics. Assist the Design staff with field testing to ensure user needs have been met. Assist Design staff in preparation for meetings and presentations.
* Miscellaneous - Support project leaders with project documentation. Assist with product photography. Create and submit for design competitions. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
* Be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in Industrial Design
* Good written communication, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills
* Analytical problem solving and judgement
* Reliable transportation to travel locally between company locations during scheduled workday

Job Description
The controls designer is responsible for the creation of the control scheme to operate cooling and monitoring on medium and large power transformers. Creating schematics and wiring diagrams for customers and manufacturing purposes using control design and cad programs. Reviewing customer specifications and including standard and non-standard equipment and circuitry. Creating bills of materials for manufacturing. Troubleshooting electrical designs during manufacturing and testing. Interpret customer drawing and equipment changes and incorporate into the control scheme. Complete control component panel layouts for enclosures including relays, terminal blocks, circuit breakers, switches, wire duct and additional components. Communicate with mechanical designers, manufacturing personnel, customers and vendors.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Review customer requirement specification and interpret features into the control design.
Create schematic ladder drawings, panel layouts and point to point wiring diagrams for customer review and manufacturing process using electrical design program E3 by Zuken or alternate ECAD system.
Create bills of materials that include control enclosure, components and wire.
Prepare documentation that will assist in the mechanical design of the transformer
Incorporate revisions into design based on customer request after design review.
Designer will be responsible for troubleshooting the design during manufacturing working with manufacturing and test operators.
Research new components used in control design
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Ability to work under minimal supervision for design questions or technical problems.
Strong work ethic and a Team player.

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
Understanding of the function of relays, circuit breakers, PLCs, panel building and other control items.
Understanding of Microsoft Office Suite

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required Education / Experience
Associate's Degree in Control circuits, equivalent training in the Armed Services or approved equivalent in the industry with minimum 3-5 years design experience.
Preferred Experience/ Education
Working knowledge in designing with E3 wiring Program

Join GE Vernova's Gas Power business to rethink gas turbine design. Within System Technologies & Adaptive Intelligence (STAI), you'll link geometry engines and conceptual design tools with physics-based solvers for CFD, heat transfer, optimization, and mechanical analysis, turning complex workflows into automated, reproducible pipelines. Over the internship, deliver a working proof of concept, beta test with users, and showcase results to Chief Engineers-advancing cleaner, more flexible power. Project Outcomes:
• Deliver a working proof-of-concept (POC) connecting geometry engines and conceptual system design tools to physics-based gas turbine tools (CFD, heat transfer, optimization, mechanical) via APIs/MCPs or other workflow techniques; enable automated execution of multi-tool workflows.
• Beta test the POC with user communities; collect feedback and iterate for robustness, usability, and reliability.
• Provide progress demos and final report-outs to leadership and/or Chief Engineers.
• Produce clear documentation (architecture, interfaces, usage) and recommend next steps toward operationalization (e.g., scaling toward TRL 5+ readiness).
• Apply Lean / Agile / Six Sigma concepts to deliver outcomes on-time, aligned with STAI's vision and charters.
Primary Skills Developed:
• Workflow design and orchestration patterns for engineering toolchains.

The pay for this position ranges from $34/hr. based on years of graduate field of study completed.
