Detroit Athletic Club company history timeline

1887

The Detroit Athletic Club was founded in 1887 to encourage amateur athletic activities, and built a clubhouse with a tract in what is now Detroit's Cultural Center.

1913

Some 26 years after the club's founding, on January 4, 1913, Joy and 108 other leading Detroit citizens came together to reorient the Detroit Athletic Club.

In 1913, the DAC board of directors commissioned architect Albert Kahn to design their new clubhouse.

1915

From its grand opening on April 17, 1915, the DAC was one of the first clubs of its type to allow the women of member’s families in the clubhouse.

Though changes and modernizations have been undertaken since its completion in 1915, the building’s layout remains basically as Kahn designed it.

1924

But despite a history that can be marked by publicly observed gender tension, including a 1924 debate over allowing women to smoke in the club, no such temporary reprieves are required.

1945

On the club’s 30th anniversary in 1945, the members voted to curtail the celebration in order to open the building up for three days to over 1000 wounded veterans.

2013

The University Club of Detroit, sold off to a liquor store owner, burned at 5 a.m. on June 15, 2013 and was then demolished.
