What is it like to work at Dialysis Clinic

September 22, 2009 on Reddit

I did hemodialysis for 9 months! The best dialysis techs make a world of difference. I just wanna say "Thanks" on behalf of your patients! :)

well, we all appreciate the thanks we get, although it's just a job for a lot of people. Some of us actually care! I'm glad to read about your transplant in the other comment, I hope everything is going well for you. We never really get the opportunity to send people off because the majority of all transplants we deal with are cadaveric, only one live donation in my 5 years. She was young (23 I think) and her 19 year old sister gave her a Kidney. It was very cool. I told her she had to make sure to give her sister totally awesome birthday and Christmas presents from then on.

Wow, totally different experience for me. I'm an RN in a dialysis clinic. The joy when a patient gets a transplant is unbelievable. We save lives every day! It's more about what the patient does for themselves that keeps them alive. We can only do so much. Hope you get into something you like better. How have you been able to cope with your job for 5 years?

I have to say, when that patient you really like gets a transplant, it will make any person cry. Partially because you're happy for them, but also because you know you're not going to see that person again :( It's not that I've been able to cope, it's that I like the patients. I like getting to know these people, but it's hard for me, being a sorta realist to go into work everyday, knowing that we're just prolonging the inevitable. Yes, I know, everyone dies, but these people are dying at an accelerated rate. It's just hard. My Coping mechanism is Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat.

To start off - Thank you! Dont be so harsh on yourself. Thanks to you, the equipment is kept contamination free, reducing infections (HAIs) in patients. The way I think about it is you are giving them prolonged life. What an honorable job! I wanted to share something with you and get your opinion. I would certainly appreciate it. Here goes... Most of renal failures (due to diabetes or kindney failure or PKD), if you look at the research going on in these areas, at various medical institutions (around the world), its at snails pace. Its almost as if, the manufacturers of drugs and dialysis equipment, dont want to find a cure for the respective disease, because, they will loose money on very profitable consumables. Congress have pretty much kept the research funding still since 10+ years. Dialysis Clinic lobbys are said to have joined, dialysis equipment manufacturers to maintain this monopoly. If funding for research to find the cure(s), is increased, that may put dialysis clinics out of business. What have you seen in your experience? Are patients taken advantage of? I have family and friends who are on dialysis, on their behalf - Thank you once again.

I completely agree that the reasons for so little advancement in the research for cures and alternative therapies for Kidney patients is profit driven. I work for a not for profit company, which is actually kind of great. We've never really been concerned about the bottom line, until the past year. We've had some benefit reductions and our LPN's took a pay cut statewide, but other than that, we're really not a profit hungry company. I think companies like (I hope I don't get sued) Gambro and Fresenius are really in it for the money. The companies that create the machines and the drugs and everything else, don't really care about the patients, and it bothers me. A lot. The majority of the people I work with, Care about the patients first. I'm not saying that the for profits don't, I just think that when you take profit margins out of the equation, quality of care goes up. Another can of worms I'm going to open is stem cells. If we could research the growth of new kidney's, Every single dialysis nurse would be out of a job, and I George Foreman guarantee you that not a single one of them would complain, because it would make people have full, healthy lives.

Does the place you work at train the RN's on site or do they have to go get outside training? Just curious as I have been thinking about doing dialysis on the side to make extra money.

We have a six month training period for all new RN hires. They do about 5 months of basic patient care training followed by a month of Charge Nurse/Med Nurse training. It's really hit or miss with our RN's too...They're either the coolest, most competent nurse I've ever met, or a completely idiotic moron, that wouldn't know their *** from a hole in the ground. I know thats crude, but its how I feel. I think part of the reason I've started to resent my job, is that the REALLY GOOD nurses and Techs that I work with, get recruited out of our clinic. Thus leaving the bottom of the barrel. I think this is just a phenomenon experienced at my facility alone however.
