Position Summary:
To provide a safe and accurate hemodialysis treatment to patients with kidney failure while working under the supervision of a Nurse or Physician.
Position Responsibilities:
Accurately sets up machine by attaching prescribed dialyzer and appropriate tubing in preparation for patient use. This includes priming lines/tubing with saline and demonstrating knowledge in using appropriate equipment to assist with the machine set-up.
Assist patient if necessary into dialysis unit.
Record the necessary pre-treatment information such as weight and vital signs.
Accurately calculate fluid removal necessary for treatment and set-up. Document patient information appropriately in electronic charting system.
Spends adequate time addressing patient needs, while being mindful of daily treatment schedule.
Explains procedure and operation of dialysis machine to new patients.
Answers any questions within their scope of knowledge, referring patients to appropriate staff if necessary.
Properly obtain patient labs before or following treatment.
Connect patient to dialysis machine to begin treatment process independently.
Interpret patient's vital signs, monitor for adverse reactions, and report any necessary information to the RN every 30 minutes during patient care.
Communicates well with team members.
Able to complete necessary tasks while providing quality care in a fast pace environment if necessary.
Able to perform physical tasks, such as disinfection of patient area between treatments in allotted time frame.
Complete proper access preparation for each patient pre-treatment. This includes effectively evaluating and accessing fistulas or catheters, while following proper infection control techniques.
Documents necessary treatment outcomes for patients including post dialysis weight and vital signs.
Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to cleaning duties, quality control management and maintenance of dialysis equipment that is scheduled weekly, monthly or quarterly and deemed necessary by State guidelines or RN on duty.
All tasks are within Technicians scope of practice.
