Diesel company history timeline

1978

In 1978 Rosso was working for a clothing manufacturer called Moltex, which was owned by Adriano Goldschmied.

1979

Released for 1979, the Oldsmobile 350 cubic inch Diesel V8 was an $850 option that promised to return 30 miles per gallon – an astonishing feat for a full-size sedan.

1979:Diesel brand is launched.

1980

Once more, GE did not give in and spent many years fine-tuning its design until it had overtaken EMD by the 1980's.

1982

1982:Factory outlet store is opened.

1984

1984:Diesel Kids line is launched.

1985

In a 1985 article in Automotive News, L. F. Koci, then general manager of DDA and later president of the independent Detroit Diesel, cited an influx of diesel engines from Europe and Japan as a major cause of the drop in DDA sales.

Rosso bought out Goldschmied’s interest in the Diesel brand name in 1985 for US$500,000.

Astonishingly, the Olds diesel soldiered on until 1985, even after owners filed, and and eventually won, a massive class action lawsuit against GM for its terribly-built engines.

1987

Over the next six years, however, Detroit Diesel underwent a precipitous decline, and by 1987 its market share had dwindled to less than 5 percent.

A four-cycle diesel engine, the Series 60, was developed in 1987.

1988

As reported in Financial World in 1988, he eliminated redundant computer costs, and consolidated manufacturing operations in an effort to cut the operating budget by more than $70 million.

In 1988, shortly after the introduction of the Series 60, GM and the Penske Corporation began to collaborate.

In 1988, GM entered into a joint venture with Penske Corporation, owned by famous auto racer and business magnate Roger Penske to create the Detroit Diesel Corporation.

1989

Released for 1989, the Dodge Ram Cummins Turbo Diesel was a surprise hit for the company.

The debut of the company's Diesel Female collection in 1989 further expanded the company's target markets.

1989:Diesel Female is launched.

With better fuel economy and all that torque, diesels were perfect for hauling, especially when speed didn’t matter. It didn’t come to our shores at the time (Audi was in a little bit of trouble here back then), but the now-infamous “TDI” acronym first appeared on a Volkswagen AG product on Audi’s full-size diesel-powered 1989 100 sedan.

1990

Steve served on many ADS committees and in 1990 became the Association's first second generation president.

1991

Diesel launched its first ‘For Successful Living’ advertising campaign in 1991, instantly establishing a reputation for innovative marketing.

German giant Mercedes-Benz entered into an agreement with Detroit Diesel in 1991 to develop electronic fuel delivery systems.

1991:International advertising campaign begins.

1993

Over the next several years the truck engines seemed to hold up well, and the $82 million that the Series 60 had brought the company by 1993 suggested that Detroit Diesel had overcome its reputation for unreliable products.

In 1993 Detroit Diesel formed a joint venture company with RABA PLC of Gyor, Hungary.

However, business improved in 1993 and the company became publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “DDC”.

1994

In 1994 Steve Bailey moved from Columbus, Ohio and returned home to become President and Chief Operating Officer of Diesel Injection Service Company, Inc., the leader of The Diesel USA Group.

1994:55-DSL brand is launched; license for Diesel eyewear is acquired.

1996

The brand’s first flagship stores, in New York, Rome and London, opened in 1996.

1997

In 1997, Renzo Rosso's success was crowned with Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year award.

1998

The company quickly built up its retail operations, topping 25 stores by 1998.

1998:DieselStyleLab label is launched.

1999

The sunglasses became a quick success, prompting the company to develop other licensed products, such as a line of Diesel perfumes and fragrances manufactured by Germany's Marbett, and then extending to footwear, luggage, and, in a license granted in 1999, watches made by Fossil.

2000

In 2000, German automaker DaimlerChrysler purchased the Detroit Diesel Corporation for about $700 million, through a major stock buyout.

In 2000, the company prepared to launch the career of a 'fake' celebrity, building a global advertising campaign around its sponsorship of an unknown Polish singer--complete with CD release, tabloid hype, and fan club.

2001

2001:Company expands to Spain and Portugal.

2005

So, in 2005 Detroit Diesel Corporation invested $350 million to refurbish and retool its plant.

By 2005, while diesels were threatening to overtake gas-powered auto sales in Europe, low-sulfur diesel was introduced in America.

2006

Introduced at the 2006 North American International Motor Show, the BlueTec diesel engine was designed to slay the “dirty diesel” stereotype once and for all.

2007

Five years later, Detroit Diesel Corporation invested $350 million to revamp its main manufacturing plant and launched the new DD engine platform in 2007.

2009

The Series 60 engine reached the one millionth unit mark in 2009.

Turnover was over €1.3 billion in 2009.”

2010

From 2010 to the current day, the Detroit Diesel Corporation and its engines have continued to grow and develop.

2011

The company was named one of the two 2011 Michigan Green Leaders by the Detroit Free Press in recognition of its sustainable development, innovation, and conservation initiatives.

2012

Unfortunately in 2012 Lloyd A. Bailey passed away, however his son Steve Bailey having grown up in the industry continues his legacy.

2015

2017

Cummins released next-generation diesels in 2017 that have redesigned emission controls and benefits to fuel economy.

2019

On May 31st, 2019, Jasper Holdings, Inc., the parent company of Jasper Engines and Transmissions acquired the Diesel USA Group of companies from the Bailey family.

Of those 2019 graduates who took electives, approximately 20% found racing-related opportunities.

2020
