    Job Description Heavy Equipment MechanicGrade 17 Salary: $47,860.80 ($ 23.01 hr) - $51,688.00 ($24.85 hr) Supervisor : Travis McLendon- Roads Superintendent PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled/manual work functions associated with repair and maintenance of heavy automotive and mechanical equipment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Diagnoses, maintains, and performs general mechanical overhaul/repair work on heavy equipment, vehicles, trailers, diesel engines, generators, and other machinery. Performs various repair/maintenance work (e.g., dismantles, overhauls, repairs and reassembles engines; replaces rings, bearings, and universal joints; grinds valves; repairs transmissions and differentials; repairs/replaces clutches; rebuilds starters, generators, and carburetors; relines brakes; replaces chains, sprockets, and other parts; installs blades and cutting edges; etc.). Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment (e.g., pumps fuel into vehicles; checks fluid levels and replaces to required levels; drains oil and replaces with new oil; changes and replaces various filters; lubricates mechanical parts; replaces tires, belts, and hoses; checks batteries; etc.). Maintains and repairs hydraulic equipment and systems. Performs minor body and paint work associated with equipment repairs. Performs welding fabrication/repair tasks associated with equipment repairs. Tests machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations. Operates a wrecker and a tractor trailer to haul equipment between shop and county job sites. Operates a variety of heavy and light equipment, machinery and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, and testing equipment (e.g., wrecker, tractor trailer, backhoe, asphalt spreader, roller, chain saw, mechanic tools, gauges, volt ohmmeters, diagnostic instruments, etc.). Provides advise, recommendations and instruction related to equipment use, safety and longevity; assesses proposed new equipment and provides input. Completes various forms, reports or other documents; forwards as appropriate or maintains for reference. Receives various reports, forms, diagrams, operational manuals, etc.; reviews, processes, or forwards as appropriate; maintains documentation for reference. Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages and/or directs calls to appropriate personnel; responds to requests for service. Responds to routine requests for information or assistance from members of the staff, the public or other individuals. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Conducts training and testing of county employees to meet Commercial Driver's License requirements. Performs general cleaning/housekeeping tasks associated with maintaining garage areas. May supervise activities of inmates on assigned work details. Conducts various errands as assigned (e.g., pick up or deliver parts/supplies). Performs other related duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of the theory, construction and operation of large diesel engines and associated heavy equipment; knowledge of the principles, practices, and standards of servicing, maintaining, and operating heavy automotive and mechanical equipment; knowledge of machine shop practices; knowledge of standard tools and methods used in automotive and mechanical repair work; knowledge of the principles and mechanics of internal combustion and diesel engines; knowledge of occupational hazards and safety techniques; knowledge of departmental functions, organization, and policies; and knowledge of the security procedures associated with supervising inmate work details. Skill in detecting and correcting the cause of malfunctions of large diesel engines and heavy automotive and mechanical equipment; skill in servicing, maintaining, and operating a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment; skill in the use and care of tools and equipment of the trade; and skill in driving. Ability to perform a variety of mechanical repair/maintenance functions related to automotive and mechanical equipment; ability to diagnose and repair large diesel engines and associated heavy equipment; ability to operate a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment; ability to understand departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations; ability to understand and follow simple written and oral instructions; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public; ability to perform manual work functions; ability to stoop, kneel, climb, or otherwise physically maneuver with equipment and on work sites; and ability to safely lift and/or carry weights of up to 100 pounds. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED required; three years of mechanical experience including repair of diesel engines and heavy equipment or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
