ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Drives and operates all types of automotive equipment, heavy-duty trucks and buses in operation to determine malfunction and repairs and maintains all types of automotive equipment. Inspects and tests equipment at prescribed intervals of time and usage or upon malfunction. Overhauls gas or diesel engines. Installs new ignition systems, aligns front wheels, changes or recharges batteries and replaces and rebuilds transmissions and other parts. Inspects, tests and aligns wheels and maintains electrical systems and controls in company vehicles. Examines protective guards, loose bolts and specified safety devices on vehicles, and makes adjustments. Balances wheels to minimize wear on tires and rotates wheels at prescribed mileage intervals. Tunes up engine to maintain combustion control standards. Adjusts equipment to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicles inspections and safety standards. Lubricates moving parts and drives repaired vehicles, trucks or buses to verify conformance to specifications. Uses hoist wrenches, gauges, drills or grinders, or other specialized auto mechanic tools and equipment. Continual on-the-job training will be required to successfully maintain classification level. Tests will cover all phases of mechanics. The testing will be administered and reviewed by the Transportation Manager or designated representative. Regular Attendance Required. Mechanic Wage Range: $24.50-$32.00 per hour (wage based on experience and qualifications) Under general direction, performs miscellaneous skilled work in the maintenance, alteration, and repair of buildings and mechanical systems; may instruct, lead workers, and independent performance of a wide variety of skilled maintenance tasks. This is a temporary seasonal position not to exceed 122 days that will be scheduled full-time hours. Schedule: Monday-Thursday 7 am to 3:30 pm; Friday 6:00 am to 2:30 pm.
