Primary Purpose: To inspect, maintain, diagnose issues, and repairing all components of a bus to ensure its safe and reliable operation on the road, including performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting malfunctions, and making necessary repairs to the engine, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, and other critical parts of the vehicle; essentially keeping the bus in roadworthy condition. Qualifications: • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination to include vision, hearing, alcohol and drug testing and an acceptable driving record documented by a Motor Vehicle Records Check • Working knowledge and ability to repair air and hydraulic brake systems • Responsible for buying own tools and having all tools needed to complete a wide range of maintenance tasks - On average of approximately $15,000.00 in tools • Possess or obtain within ninety (90) calendar days of employment a Valid Texas Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with School Bus (S), Passenger (P) and a driving record that meets the requirements of the Texas Department of Public Safety School Bus Certification and the District • Preferred ASE or TASBT certification: minimum three in School Bus or HD Truck. Utilizes diagnostic equipment to analyze mechanical and electronic problems on electronic engines, transmissions, and ABS brake systems on a wide variety of vehicles and corrects them with a minimal amount of direct supervision. 2. Services air conditioning systems to include troubleshooting electrical components and installation of complete air conditioning systems on vehicles. 3. Troubleshoots electrical systems and components using a computerized multi-meter to check for voltage, amps, ohms and current draw. 4. Performs drivability test to insure safe operation of vehicles after completion of maintenance and/or repairs. 5. Inspects body damage; repairs and paints a variety of vehicle bodies. 6. Utilizes cutting torch, Mig arc welders and power band saw to fabricate and to repair brackets or bracing. 7. Assists all District drivers with adjustments to vehicles. 8. Travels to a broken-down vehicle "on the road", analyzes the problems and repairs if possible or requests a wrecker. 9. Communicates status of vehicles to dispatcher over a two-way radio. 10. Services vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedules. 11. Inspects and performs complete brake jobs on all District vehicles. 12. Inspects and repairs all wheel chair lifts - electrical and hydraulic systems. 13. Demonstrates process of preventive maintenance and other maintenance tasks to shop helpers. 14. Maintains, updates, and submits accurate maintenance records. 15. Records all parts, materials and time to perform repairs and services. 16. Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and reports any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately. 17. Works with hazardous chemicals and materials in accordance with safety procedures. 18. Helps keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe and clean operating condition. 19. Serves as an interim supervisor in the absence of a shift's Lead Mechanic. 20. Maintains confidentiality of all information. 21. Occasionally required to drive other District vehicles as needed. 22. Regularly required to safely operate a school bus and transport students to and from school and other designated locations in accordance with Texas code and the Transportation Department Employee Safety and Policy Handbook. 23. Reports to work on time every day. 24. Performs additional duties and responsibilities as may be assigned. Summary: Provide mechanical maintenance support to maintain equipment in an electrical generating power plant; may perform Lead Mechanic duties during absence of a Lead Mechanic. Essential Duties/Responsibilities: * Install, maintain, test, inspect, and repair equipment such as boilers, turbines, pumps, motors, valves, condensers, heat exchanger vessels, etc. * Replaces bearings, packing in pumps and valves, shaft seals, sleeves, seats, and other miscellaneous parts used in plant equipment. * Troubleshoot stationary and rotating equipment. Make repairs as need in accordance with best practices. * Operate machine shop equipment such as drill presses, lathes and boring mills. * Repair or replace defective parts. * Adjust clearances and tolerances on equipment, working from a blueprint, pattern or design drawing, lays out. * Use micrometers and other precision devices. * Design and build special tools and apparatus to facilitate work. * Scrape and fits bearings on rotating equipment. * Checks equipment operation by observing oil pressures and levels, foreign sounds and similar observations. Gather routine vibration data and perform basic analysis. * Perform gas and/or arc welding in mechanical repairs and fabrication. JOB OPPORTUNITY January 9, 2026 JOB TITLE: Fleet Technician Harris County Emergency Services District No. 17 (“HCESD17” or “District”) is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Fleet Technician. HCESD17 is a fire department providing services to residents in Harris County. The service area is twenty-six (26) square miles on the north side of Houston, serving both commercial and residential areas. The population served by the district is approximately 100,000. The typical call volume per year is around 3,600 calls and we maintain four (4) staffed stations, an administrative building and a training field. POSITION OVERVIEW: The Fleet Technician, under the general direction of the Fleet Manager, will be responsible for all preventative maintenance and any and all repairs needed of the District fleet. Documentation of all repairs and organization and management of parts and tools is also required. This role will also assist in the maintenance of heavy machinery in and around the District. RESPONSIBILITIES: • While always performing under the latest applicable laws, regulations and safety standards, our Fleet Technician will perform routine maintenance and repair on all District apparatus, vehicles, and equipment. • Coordinating with Fleet Manager to schedule preventive maintenance and ensure fleet downtime is kept to a minimum. • Coordinate with any outside vendors for parts and repairs, while maintaining parts inventory. • Diagnose issues through visual, computer software and manual inspection. • Troubleshoot and repair all electrical, mechanical, and/or hydraulic systems in all District fleet and equipment. • Fabricate specialized items needed for storage, racks, and equipment, which may include welding, fabricating and assembly. • Perform routine servicing and preventive maintenance such as checking and replacing fluid levels, filters, lubricating parts, repairing brakes and a/c, rotating, and replacing tires, replacing belts and hoses flushing of fluids, washing of parts, apparatus, and shop, disposal of regulated waste materials and any other items as directed. • Maintaining all documentation and logs for repair work, preventive maintenance, inspection, warranty, and all other recordkeeping requirements pursuant to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and/or other regulatory agencies. • Ability to operate and drive to and from destinations as assigned by Fleet Manager. • Always maintain communication with Fleet Manager on status of fleet. • Stay current on new and improved parts, repair techniques, and standards. • While unlikely, the Fleet Technician can be requested at night or on weekends for an emergency repair. • Abide by all Department rules and policies. • Perform other duties as assigned. Reports any issues to our Fleet Manager regarding issues resolved, those needing attention, and those currently in progress.
