Reports to Jail Lieutenant & Administrative Captain The Fleet Mechanic / Inmate Supervisor is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the Sheriff's Office fleet, including patrol vehicles, administrative vehicles, and other department-owned equipment. This position requires the ability to supervise and oversee inmate workers who assist in basic maintenance and other assigned tasks. The role also requires the individual to obtain and maintain a Corrections License as regulated by the Texas Administrative Code 217.
Principle Duties
• Diagnose, maintain, and repair fleet vehicles and equipment, including brakes, engines, electrical systems, and transmissions.
• Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance to ensure optimal performance.
• Maintain service records, repair logs, and parts inventory for all fleet vehicles.
• Coordinate with vendors for parts, supplies, and specialized repairs beyond in-house capabilities.
• Use diagnostic tools and software to identify vehicle issues.
• Adhere to workplace safety standards and state/local regulations.
• Assist with emergency response support as required by the Sheriff's Office.
• Supervise inmate workers in fleet maintenance tasks, ensuring safety and security.
• Oversee daily inmate activities, ensuring custody, control, and supervision.
• Monitor contraband, unusual behavior, and escape attempts.
• Supervise the feeding of inmates and inmate worker assignments.
• Ensure adherence to all security protocols and procedures.

Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Ability to pass a pre-employment physical, drug test, and physical readiness test.

Provide mechanical maintenance support to maintain equipment in an electrical generating power plant; may perform Lead Mechanic duties during absence of a Lead Mechanic.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
* Install, maintain, test, inspect, and repair equipment such as boilers, turbines, pumps, motors, valves, condensers, heat exchanger vessels, etc.
* Replaces bearings, packing in pumps and valves, shaft seals, sleeves, seats, and other miscellaneous parts used in plant equipment.

JOB OPPORTUNITY January 9, 2026 JOB TITLE: Fleet Technician Harris County Emergency Services District No. 17 (“HCESD17” or “District”) is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Fleet Technician.
HCESD17 is a fire department providing services to residents in Harris County. The service area is twenty-six (26) square miles on the north side of Houston, serving both commercial and residential areas. The population served by the district is approximately 100,000. The typical call volume per year is around 3,600 calls and we maintain four (4) staffed stations, an administrative building and a training field.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Fleet Technician, under the general direction of the Fleet Manager, will be responsible for all preventative maintenance and any and all repairs needed of the District fleet. Documentation of all repairs and organization and management of parts and tools is also required. This role will also assist in the maintenance of heavy machinery in and around the District.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• While always performing under the latest applicable laws, regulations and safety standards, our Fleet Technician will perform routine maintenance and repair on all District apparatus, vehicles, and equipment.
• Coordinating with Fleet Manager to schedule preventive maintenance and ensure fleet downtime is kept to a minimum.
• Coordinate with any outside vendors for parts and repairs, while maintaining parts inventory.
• Diagnose issues through visual, computer software and manual inspection.
• Troubleshoot and repair all electrical, mechanical, and/or hydraulic systems in all District fleet and equipment.
• Fabricate specialized items needed for storage, racks, and equipment, which may include welding, fabricating and assembly.
• Perform routine servicing and preventive maintenance such as checking and replacing fluid levels, filters, lubricating parts, repairing brakes and a/c, rotating, and replacing tires, replacing belts and hoses flushing of fluids, washing of parts, apparatus, and shop, disposal of regulated waste materials and any other items as directed.
• Maintaining all documentation and logs for repair work, preventive maintenance, inspection, warranty, and all other recordkeeping requirements pursuant to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and/or other regulatory agencies.
• Ability to operate and drive to and from destinations as assigned by Fleet Manager.
• Always maintain communication with Fleet Manager on status of fleet.
• Stay current on new and improved parts, repair techniques, and standards.
• While unlikely, the Fleet Technician can be requested at night or on weekends for an emergency repair.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

HOURS:
The Fleet Technician will be assigned to work M-F, 8-5, but can be required to work some weekends and nights during an emergency situation.
COMPENSATION:
Wage - $75,000.00 annually, Hourly Rate $36.06
Overtime after 40 hours, paid at 1.5-times hourly rate, FLSA Non-exempt
Insurance - Medical, vision, dental covered 100% employee, 80% dependents. Life - Employees are covered with Basic and GTL, Dependent or Additional Life can be purchased.
Vacation time - Accrued based on years of service, 2 weeks to start.

What You'll Do:
Tests, services, and repairs tractors, trailers and related mechanical components.
* Diagnose and repair transmission, engine, electrical, suspension, driveline, HVAC, brakes and air systems on tractors and trailers. May require assistance from Tech III.
* Perform light trailer body repairs including doors, tires, lighting system etc.
* Perform basic and routine preventative maintenance on tractors and trailers.
* Repair/replace bolts on body parts such as hoods and cab extenders.
* Drive trucks and pull trailers using a yard jockey in and out of the shop before and after repairs.
* Perform DOT inspections as outlined in USX guidelines; accurately complete DOT forms and all other forms of documentation in timely fashion.
* Perform open seat inspections to prepare tractor for next driver.
* Perform 90-day lease operator inspections.
* Clean and maintain work area on a daily basis.
* Maintain a high level of productivity and be able to work within or close to most SRT times.
* Check vehicle fluids; transmission, oil, windshield wiper, antifreeze, etc.
* Perform vehicle preventative maintenance (PM's) as outlined in USX PM guidelines.
* Change vehicle tires.

What We're Looking For:
Education
* High school diploma or equivalent required.
* Technical Diploma from an accredited Diesel Technology preferred.
Experience
* Minimum of 3 years of tractor and trailer experience required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Unit disassembly, cleaning, and inspection including the accurate collection and recording of technical inspection data for equipment repair proposals.
Maintain, diagnose, and repair all types of rotating equipment.
Complete required maintenance to return equipment back to customer operating condition, per OEM specifications.
Prepare and complete service documentation.
Maintaining clear and concise daily work records. Use of basic problem-solving skills in terms of gathering facts, analyzing the cause, and selecting the best most accurate solution.
Maintenance of shop equipment and regular daily shop housekeeping to ensure an organized and safe working environment.
Responsible for understanding and complying with the safety policy, procedures, and instructions.
Disassemble complex rotating equipment and provide written observations of failure modes and condition of “as received” parts.
Assist in cleaning and prepping parts for NDT and PMI examination.
