QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is: * Four years of progressively responsible mechanical experience as a journeyman mechanic (or equivalent combination of education and experience). * Waste and recycling industry experience preferred. * Experience and knowledge of DOT Out-of-Service Criteria including CHP B.I.T. Inspections and DOT compliance audits. * Experience working in a maintenance facility or related environment with vehicles, processing equipment such as: balers, conveyors, hoppers, electric motors and landfill equipment preferred. * Expert knowledge of diesel and/or compressed natural gas engines, heavy equipment mechanical components and parts, as well as fabrication tools and techniques. * Knowledge of alternating and direct current electrical controls and motor systems. * Knowledge of federal, state and local job site health and safety rules, regulations and best practices; understanding of potential job hazards. * Basic computer programs. * High school diploma or GED preferred. * Graduation from a formalized mechanical trade school highly desirable. * Valid Driver's License required. * Valid Class A or B Commercial Drivers License with no restrictions required within 6 months of hire. * Candidate(s) without valid Class A or B Commercial Drivers License upon hire must possess a valid DOT medical certificate and instruction permit for a Class A or B Commercial Drivers License with air brake endorsement prior to hire. The City's vehicle and equipment fleet currently consists of over 2,700 assets. The Department of Public Works Fleet Management Division is recruiting to fill two (2) Apprentice Mechanic positions. The Apprentice Mechanic position will be trained on the repair and maintenance of the City of San Jose's diverse vehicle and equipment fleet. The incumbent will be rotated through various facilities to acquire the knowledge, experience, and skills necessary to fulfill the requirements of this position. Parallel with the on-the-job training, the apprentice will be also required to take and successfully complete courses during on and off shift and on the apprentice's own time with a designated college and other learning programs as directed by the Apprentice Committee.
