This is a temporary, part-time position (29 hours per week). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Perform diagnostic and preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including tune-ups, oil and filter changes, cooling system checks, air conditioning systems, and lubrication; Service, rebuild, or replace major and minor driveline equipment parts such as engines, generators, distributors, brakes, rotors, clutches, transmissions, fuel pumps, compressors, exhaust systems, seats, differentials, drivelines, gearboxes, alternators, starters, etc.; Changing, rotating, and repairing both light and heavy-duty tires; Repair damage to vehicles, snowplows, sanders, and light and heavy-duty equipment; Fabricates parts and makes modifications to existing equipment for adaptation to department-specific needs; Check and repair lights, ignition systems, electrical components, hydraulic systems, and suspension systems on vehicles and equipment; Diagnose problems in electrical, fuel, and hydraulic systems and various mechanical components. Bumper-to-bumper preventative maintenance inspections and oil and lube changes; Preventative maintenance and repair of transit shuttle buses, fire apparatus, ambulance, police, public works vehicles, and light and heavy equipment; Reading and understanding service manuals and schematics; Repair and maintain small, motorized equipment such as chain saws, lawnmowers, weed eaters, 2 and 4-cycle; Provide emergency field assistance to disabled vehicles, busses, and equipment; Test, diagnose, service, and repair vehicles and equipment in the most cost-effective manner possible; Ability to keep up with daily electronic and written work orders, inspection repairs, and part order requests as assigned and in a timely manner; Repair and maintain ambulance and fire apparatus electrical, heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems; Repair and maintain ambulance and fire apparatus cab, chassis, and power train; Operation of automotive diagnostic and repair equipment; Use of both electric and gas welding equipment. The Fleet Division consists of 14 staff members responsible for the service and maintenance of all 640+ vehicles and equipment including Police Department vehicles, Commercial Motor Vehicles, Construction Equipment, and more. Technicians ensure all vehicles and equipment are properly maintained, repaired, and safe so that staff using them can do their jobs as effectively as possible. This position will primarily provide coordination and support services to the Police Department (PD) relative to repairs and maintenance of police vehicles through the Fleet Maintenance Division. This position also provides support for vehicle shuttling, communication and scheduling of PD specific police equipment, maintaining the supply room and performing minor vehicle repairs and maintenance as necessary. Must have strong communication and organization skills. * Resolves simple issues that are reported to Fleet through the VDR system that can be completed at the PD facility in a timely manner. This would include items such as battery replacements, install spare tires, windshield wipers, topping off vehicle fluids, etc. * Purchases and creates maintenance and tracking programs for all Police vehicle equipment such as Low Jack, License Plate Readers, Brazos Printers, Radars, headsets for BMW motorcycles, SIM Cards for cradle point(s), PIT Cars, and coordinates repairs for PD specific equipment with outside vendors outside of new vehicle purchases or transfers between vehicles. * Coordinates with IT for computer and communication equipment repair issues. * Identifies and schedules window tinting, logo replacements for motorcycles, vehicles and other PD equipment. * Maintains PD key box and spare vehicle key needs for PD vehicles. * PD radio tracking, including vehicle radios and coordination with outside vendors for maintenance services and repairs. * Coordinates with the police department to identify safety equipment and supplies in vehicles. * Cleans exterior and interior of vehicles on an as needed basis for parades, funerals etc. * Appropriately handles biohazardous situations involving vehicles, which require communication and scheduling with outside vendors. * Inspects PD equipment supply room and maintains stock orders and inventory counts. * Performs pre-delivery inspections and check in of police vehicles. * Prepares and installs trunk kits in the back of Patrol units when being put into service. * Installs window stickers as needed such as car wash and express toll tags. * Removes all Police trunk kit items from vehicles when they are being decommissioned or on an as needed basis. * Coordinates with officers to ensure removal of all sensitive material from cars prior to vehicle service. (Guns, ammunition, evidence etc). General Technician III responsibilities: * Responsible for all general duties of the Fleet Tech I and Tech II * Provides guidance and mentoring to lower-line and less experienced technicians when needed. * Under the direction of and in partnership with the Fleet Manager and Parts/Service Supervisor, the incumbent provides direction, coaching, mentoring and overall development of staff. * Perform mechanic assignments using independent judgment to make decisions requiring the application of procedures and practices to specific work situations * Perform a full range of servicing and repairs on various types of fleet equipment (Light Duty Vehicles, Heavy Duty Vehicles (Class 8), Street Sweeper Systems, Construction Equipment, Gasoline & Diesel Engines, Snow Removal Equipment, Electrical, Hydraulic, HVAC, Air Brakes, Electronic Scan Tool, Emissions Systems, Welding, etc), including malfunctioning parts and systems.
