15 digital design engineer skills for your resume and career

1. Digital Design

Digital design is a general term that refers to any kind of design that appears in a digital format on an app or website, rather than in print on a physical page. The purpose of digital design is to create digital assets for multimedia graphics projects including advertising, animation, emails, mobile apps, social media, websites, video games, and interactive displays.

Here's how digital design engineers use digital design:
  • Worked in a product group as a digital design engineer in the development of a high function typewriter.
  • Accomplished digital design tasks including Circuit Card Assembly design/debug, FPGA/CPLD design and VHDL coding & simulation.

2. Synthesis

Synthesis refers to the process of combining a number of things to become something new. Depending on the field of work, this may mean combining ideas, products, and new influences into a new service or product. Overall, the process is focused on reviewing and analyzing different data points to make something new.

Here's how digital design engineers use synthesis:
  • Generated and optimized synthesis and Post CTS constraints to maximize performance and reduce area requirements.
  • Performed back-end flow from RTL code synthesis, timing driven physical design to achieve a timing closure type-out database.

3. Verilog

Verilog іѕ a Hаrdwаrе Dеѕсrірtіоn Language, HDL; a textual fоrmаt tо dеѕсrіbе еlесtrоnіс circuits аnd systems. Verilog wаѕ dеvеlореd tо be used for vеrіfісаtіоn thrоugh ѕіmulаtіоn, for tіmіng analysis, fоr tеѕt analysis аnd fаult grаdіng аnd fоr logic ѕуnthеѕіѕ.

Here's how digital design engineers use verilog:
  • Developed complete Verilog engineer training program, including lecture and laboratory work.
  • Designed key function Sequence Control block in Verilog in Bluetooth 4.2 chips to allow users to configure chips in different scenarios.

4. RTL

Here's how digital design engineers use rtl:
  • Executed RTL design, block-level verification for various blocks and system-level verification, and silicon validation.
  • Implemented RTL Design for Data Converters using various Serial/Parallel Interfaces.

5. SOC

SOC stands for "System and Organization Controls" report, which is conducted by a third-party auditor independent from the company being reported on. An SOC report demonstrates that a company is acting ethically, which may lead to more retained clients.

Here's how digital design engineers use soc:
  • Worked with SoC architects to redefine and redesign high-speed embedded Flash read interfaces.
  • Verified several functionalities at SOC using assertions.

6. RF

Here's how digital design engineers use rf:
  • Worked closely with RF, software and systems teams to define requirements and to successfully integrate designs in lab.
  • Designed Radar Printed Circuit Boards including RF Output Module and Fiber Optic board operating at UHF.

7. Analog

An analog system refers to a system that uses continuously variable signals.

Here's how digital design engineers use analog:
  • Experienced in solving issue involving cross-clock domain or digital/analog interface.
  • Mixed Signal Design: Worked with analog engineers for digital and analog interfaces; Wrote and simulated behavior models analog blocks.

8. ASIC

Here's how digital design engineers use asic:
  • Designed processor module including peripheral ASIC with peripheral and control logic.
  • Redesigned a parameter encoder ASIC (600k gates, 0.35u), performing VHDL updates to a largely schematic-based design.

9. MATLAB

Here's how digital design engineers use matlab:
  • Maintained and updated required dlls to drive the custom in house tester using MATLAB.
  • Used Matlab for control interface with various test equipment and data analysis.

10. DSP

Digital signal processing, DSP, is the use of digital processing to perform a variety of signal processing operations, primarily audio signals. It is about developing algorithms that can improve a signal in a certain way or extract useful information. It is mainly found in audio signals, voice processing, RADAR, seismology, audio, SONAR, voice recognition, and some financial signals.

Here's how digital design engineers use dsp:
  • Contract Electrical Engineer in Command and Data Handling - Developed Dual DSP card for Land SAT satellite.
  • Designed DSP hardware for a digital effects processor, a guitar tuner and a mixer.

11. Rtl Design

Here's how digital design engineers use rtl design:
  • Designed and verified video display pipeline including RTL design, synthesis and verification.
  • Simulation-based verification of RTL design with special emphasis on IO interface.

12. Design Verification

Design verification can be defined as the examination and evaluation that leads to confirmation that the objectives have been met and specific requirements of a particular design have been fulfilled. It is the process through which you can test your design outputs to see if they match your design inputs.

Here's how digital design engineers use design verification:
  • Created design verification tests and verified designs in custom simulation and lab testing environments.
  • Provided engineering support for the DS1 and DS3/STS-1 boards, and wrote the Design Verification Documents.

13. VHDL

Here's how digital design engineers use vhdl:
  • Provided detailed historical estimates of VHDL design efforts for a proposal for software-defined radio program.
  • Worked very close with the system engineer and team members in resolving design issues and implementing the design using VHDL.

14. DFT

Here's how digital design engineers use dft:
  • Used DFT Test-Compiler to add support for JTAG and automated test support.
  • Created TDL test cases in DFT to test top-level registers and pins.

15. IC

It is an abbreviation for "integrated circuits" and is also called a microelectronic circuit or a chip. It is an assembly of electronic elements combined in a single unit in which devices like transistors, diodes, capacitors are built on semiconductor material like silicon.

Here's how digital design engineers use ic:
  • Performed requirements development, scheduling, design coding and verification, and IC validation.
  • Debugged and fixed digital state machine design error for audio IC.

What skills stand out on digital design engineer resumes?

Bryant Harrison

Instructor, Murray State University

Design Engineers should be able to think creatively and be prepared to use software to solve problems. Students who have acquired certifications in design software have shown some level of aptitude toward using that software to create and design engineering solutions.

What digital design engineer skills would you recommend for someone trying to advance their career?

Arie NakhmaniArie Nakhmani LinkedIn profile

Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Alabama at Birmingham

Electrical Engineering has always (from its inception) been a good profession to enter, but now it is better than ever. Now everything is becoming Electrical Engineering, and the world cannot survive without it even for a few days. Electrical Engineering is the most necessary profession for the survival of modern society.

What type of skills will young digital design engineers need?

John Chandy Ph.D.John Chandy Ph.D. LinkedIn profile

Professor and Department Head, University of Connecticut

I don't think my answer to this question would be any different to what I may have answered a decade ago. The technical skills that they acquire as a student will establish their qualifications to do the work. That means understanding the fundamentals of computer engineering hardware and software as well as more advanced training in specific areas of interest. However, to be truly effective in a company, they need to be able to communicate (both orally and in written form) and they need to show that they can work in a team. Most modern engineering systems will often require a computer engineer to design the control/compute interface and that often requires that the computer engineer be able to understand the language of electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and computer scientists. Finally, computer engineering is a fast-moving field, and new graduates should be prepared to continuously learn new technologies and approaches.
