1983

Dimension Data was founded in 1983 by Keith McLachlan, Werner Sievers, Jeremy Ord, Peter Neale, and Kevin Hamilton.

1984

1984: Jeremy Ord founds a network integration company in South Africa, then merges it with a company owned by two former schoolmates.

1987

The company was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on 15 July 1987.

The company was then listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange in 1987, with Ord as company chairman.

1994

By 1994, the company had launched a new Software and Services division.

1994: The company adds software development and services operations.

1996

In 1996, Dimension Data purchased a 45% stake in the Australian company, ComTech.

The company also bought a stake in the South African company, Internet Solutions, in 1996.

1997

The year 1997 also marked a year of significant growth for the company.

In 1997, the company acquired 75 percent of The Merchant Group.

Also in 1997 the company purchased majority stakes in The Merchants Group and Datacraft.

1998

One such acquisition was the 1998 purchase of London-based telecommunications company, Plessey.

1999

In 1999, the company located its first acquisition target, New Jersey-based RE/COM. Dimension Data paid $40 million to acquire 70 percent of that company.

2001

2001: Proxicom, an e-services provider in the United States, is acquired; the company posts losses of $1.6 billion for the year.

2003

By 2003, the company's revenue had jumped to $2 billion.

2004

The slow return to growth of the global IT market caught up with Dimension Data in 2004.

2004: The company reorganizes its management structure; Dasan Electronics in Korea is acquired.

In 2004, Brett Dawson was appointed as CEO of the company and Jeremy Ord was appointed as Group Executive Chairman.

2009

By September 2009, the company had an annual revenue of around $4 billion.

2010

In July 2010, Dimension Data was acquired by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) for £2.1 billion ($3.2 billion). In October of that year, NTT announced that Dimension Data would be delisted from both the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange by the end of the year.

2016

In June 2016, Brett Dawson stepped down as CEO and was replaced by then COO, Jason Goodall.

2017

2021

On 1 April 2021, Werner Kapp was appointed as CEO of the company, as Grant Bodley has resigned.
