Dippin' Dots company history timeline

1990

In 1990, production was moved to a new site in Paducah, Kentucky, and the following year a formal dealer network was established for distribution to fairs, festivals, and retail locations.

1991

1991: The firm establishes a dealer network for sale to fairs, festivals, and other sites.

1995

To keep up with demand, the firm constructed a new 32,000-square-foot processing plant in Paducah, which opened in the spring of 1995.

Japan became the first international licensee of Dippin' Dots in 1995.

1996

In 1996, Dippin’ Dots sued fellow cryogenic ice cream brand Mini Melts for infringement.

1997

By 1997, Japan alone accounted for one-fifth of the firm's total sales.

With growth still surging, in 1997 the company added another 20,000 square feet of production capacity.

1998

By the fall of 1998, Dippin' Dots products were being sold in 42 states and 13 countries by 110 dealers at 350 different locations.

2000

In 2000, the company formed a subsidiary, Dippin' Dots Franchising Inc., to further expand its reach.

2001

Although 2001 started on a bad note with the layoff of 13 of the firm's 160 workers due to a sales slump, the year also brought good news when plans were made to test-market Dippin' Dots at more than 250 McDonald's restaurants in the San Francisco Bay area.

2002

The trial was a success, and an official rollout was begun in May of 2002.

2003

2003: An Asian licensee opens a new manufacturing plant in South Korea.

2007

In 2007, the United States Patent and Trademark Office ruled against Dippin' Dots because the process of creating the ice cream was "obvious" rather than proprietary.

2012

On May 18, 2012, United States Bankruptcy Court approved the purchase of the company by Scott Fischer and his father Mark Fischer.

2014

In 2014, Dippin' Dots set a world record for the most ice cream cups prepared by a team in three minutes.

In mid-2014, the company purchased gourmet popcorn franchisor Doc Popcorn, which had about 100 stores.

2015

On February 10, 2015, the company announced they would co-brand stores with both products.

On April 1, 2015, the company posted a story on its site about their new “giant-sized Dippin’ Dot option—The Jumbo Dot!” Sadly, the oversize confection—touted as the perfect treat for graduation parties and weddings—was an April Fools' Day joke.
