Pros of working at Direct Marketing Solutions

Direct Marketing Solutions is spread out over 5 buildings in NE Portland, some miles apart. If you think that sounds like a disorganized mess, you should see it from the inside. I worked in a tiny office stuffed with about 15 people. Oppressive work environment where the boss and all co-workers can see what you’re doing at all times. Super-tense atmosphere. No plan for onboarding. My boss, the “CIO,” did not introduce himself, mostly ignored me, and seemed to hate my very presence, as if it was not his idea to hire a contractor and I had been forced upon him. Had to figure out where the bathroom (basically a poorly-lit broom closet) and tiny break room (with seating for two) were, on my own. Co-workers were mostly unfriendly and unhelpful. They seemed quiet, sad and humorless. The younger guys wore expressions of alarm and fear, as if they were unsure that they really wanted to work here. The guy next to me had an iPhone 5. In 2019. Seriously. I don’t think they pay them much. This office was connected to their printing operation. On their production floor there was no AC. I spent 18 years as a press operator and I know an awful work environment when I see it. I “upset” the boss on my second day by gently asking about work-from-home possibility (my recruiter, a liar, said this was a probability). Boss flipped out, said “not gonna happen,” then said “we’ll talk about it next week.” We didn’t of course. All his FTEs were working from home at least one day a week. He also was upset when I sent my timecard to him before EOD on a Friday. As if I was going to get it signed and then run out the door. I came to realize that he was going to pretend to be upset anytime I talked to him. He ignored the few emails I sent to him. Boss brings his dog to work. The company seemed so proud of this, as if this made it a great place to work. It didn’t. Dog bit hispanic cleaning lady. (Note to HR, if you’re reading this: this happened on or about 9/13/2019) Boss gave speech to all about how this was handled incorrectly because nobody informed him for a day or two, and vowed that his dog was banished for at least two weeks if not indefinitely. Boss brought dog back to work two days later as if nothing had happened. I mentioned at one point that I am mildly allergic to dogs. Boss didn’t respond, as usual. The cleaning lady should have sued. As I arrived on what was to be my last day, I was following the childish boss and his dog to the front door, which required m

Cons of working at Direct Marketing Solutions

Ever wonder who prints and mails all that junk mail you get in your mailbox? That’s what these guys do. They have also branched out into spam on behalf of their customers. It’s a sketchy business, and boy is this a sketchy company.
