Direct Selling Association company history timeline

1914

The Agents Credit Association was reorganized in 1914 and re-named the National Association of Agency Companies.

1920

By 1920 the association membership had grown to nearly 50 and had formed a strong enough organization to issue the following proclamation describing its purposes:

1925

At the annual convention of the NAAC in May 1925 at French Lick Springs, Ind., the association was again reorganized and renamed the National Association of Direct Selling Companies.

Attorney James George became the first executive director of the association in 1925.

1932

The ordinance was challenged on constitutional grounds by the Fuller Brush Company in 1932.

1938

Lloyd Deilke joined the association in 1938 as an assistant to Mr.

1946

The NADSC was officially incorporated in 1946 under the laws of the State of Minnesota.

1948

As a follow-on to the success of “The Fuller Brush Man” of 1948, Lucille Ball stars in this comedy.

Because consumers needed demos to understand how Tupperware containers worked, in 1948, the first Tupperware Home Party was held.

1949

In 1949, Jay and Rich became two of the top Nutrilite distributors and were introduced to that compensation plan, which allowed them to earn based on their own efforts and those of others they trained as Nutrilite sales reps.

1951

1951 was the year that Tupperware entered the retail world both through retail and through the Party Plan method.

In 1951, when the company realized they were selling more of their products through demos and Direct Selling, it decided to leave retail and focus solely on Direct Selling.

1959

According to Amway, many people assume that the Amway business model was introduced in 1959, when Jay Van Andel and Rich DeVos founded the company.

1963

Mary Kay Ash arrived in 1963 by investing her life savings to launch her company, Mary Kay.

1968

Since 1968, Seldia has been an authoritative voice for direct selling in European government affairs.

In 1968 members of the ISMA voted to abandon the organization and maintain membership only in NADSC.

1969

In June 1969, during the 55th annual meeting, the board amended the bylaws and changed the name of the association to the Direct Selling Association.

1970

Founded in 1970 by 12 Direct Selling Associations, the WFDSA was set up to address various Direct Selling problems around the world.

1978

WFDSA was founded in 1978 by 12 Direct Selling Associations.

1985

The First WFDSA World Code of Ethics was established in 1985 and adopted by the DSAs locally.

In 1985 the foundation of the Direct Selling Industry’s commitment to ethical business practices and consumer protection was founded, bringing to life a document that is regularly enriched to keep up with the demands of the marketplace.

1991

In 1991 the National Science Foundation allows the first commercial use of the Internet.

2000

2009

In 2009 a revised NPR excludes direct sellers from the scope of the rule; the final rule is still pending.

2013

Today, nearly 90 percent of the 2013 DSN Global 100 companies utilize this compensation structure.

2018

Avon is also considered the first company to fully implement the reselling and Direct Selling method and is currently ranked second in The DSN’s Global 100 list with a revenue of $5.57 billion U.S dollars in 2018.
