POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Boston Public Schools Office of Special Education (OSE) focuses on accelerating outcomes for students with disabilities through equity-based inclusive practices. Our goal is to provide each student with the individualized instruction needed to succeed in school and in life.
In SY22-23, OSE will focus on improving support to schools by partnering with School Superintendents and other district offices. Goals for this partnership include:
* Increase access to inclusive opportunities and a continuum of services at all BPS schools in order to ensure the least restrictive environment is available to all students;
* Accelerate outcomes for students with disabilities, and especially multilingual learners; and
* Decrease non-compliance rates.
Federal and state laws and regulations guarantee a free, appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE) to every student with a disability who is eligible for an Individualized Education Program (IEP). To help every child succeed, the OSE collaborates with families, communities, and social service agencies to promote improved academic and functional outcomes, self-determination, and regulatory compliance.
The Director of Extended School Year and Expanded Learning resides in the Office of Special Education within the Academics of the Boston Public Schools, reporting to the Executive Director for Special Education. This position is responsible for providing support in compliance, systemic special education procedures, and contributing in aligning systemic programmatic needs to advance the mission of the Boston Public Schools. The position will have a particular emphasis on supporting all aspects of the extended school year programming, including: accelerated academics, community organizations that provide summer and vacation programming facilities, human resources, curriculum and instruction, and operations; with a belief that families are partners. The incumbent will engage in deep collaboration with the Expanded Learning Team and other units in the district. The Director will serve a senior-level role within OSE. The Director of Extended School Year and Expanded Learning will also be responsible for having project management and administrative experience with regard to special education, extended learning, and families. This is a year round position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Special Education Extended School Year and Expanded Learning
* Deep planning and collaboration with BPS Acceleration Academies, fifth Quarter, community camps and recreation programs to provide services in robust inclusive environments for students with disabilities in natural environments, with an emphasis on providing dual language and home language access
* Develop and implement systems to provide compensatory services in extended school year, expanded learning programs, and recreational or other organized programs
* Plan and execute traditional ESY programs in sub separate programs
* Determine the needs of students who require extended school year services.
* Hiring and recruiting staff for the extended school year and expanded learning programming
* Developing and oversight of extended school year programming, including materials, curriculum, instructional needs
* Provide and oversee all staff training both in sub separate programs and in inclusive environments
* Coordinator and primary contact for extended school year and expanded learning programming
* Developing, collecting, and reporting on data of student performance, attendance, etc. of extended school year programming
* All aspects of evaluation of staff hired by BPS

* Manage ESY and expanded learning programming budgets and ensure ordering is complete and accurate
