In 1993 Yellow ceased operating its 240 cabs with company-employed drivers, leasing them instead to drivers on a daily basis.
1997’s Celebrity Talking Taxi program encouraged the use of seat belts for all taxi occupants.
In 2008, Passenger Information Monitors were installed in the back seats of all taxicabs in the city.
Car services, also known as livery cabs or license for hire vehicles were allowed to operate in New York City beginning in 2012.
In 2012, the number of licensed cab drivers in the United States rose to almost 234,000.
