I liked being a remote tech, having only to rely on my own ability to accomplish my work flow.

Cons of working at DISH Network

Sales! are a huge part of the job, even if your ability to install is second to none, and your customer service is great. if you can't seem to land sales you will fall off the ladder in this company.

So if you're out in the field and installing, what exactly are they expecting you to sell?

For products, we have Screen Cleaner ($15), Surge Protectors ($29), TV Mounts ($49-$199), Hdmi Cable ($15), and much more. Then there's services such as installing the mount for $199-$249, home theatre setup for $99-$399, TV component setup for $49, and the list goes on. If your an elderly person who purchased a new HDTV and need help taking it out of the box and put on a stand, it's a $49 fee. I would usually do it for free, but my boss has threatened to write me up if he caught me doing that. The company expects us to do a 4 room installation, mount and hang an HDTV all within 4 hours without cutting any corners.

Besides mandatory overtime, what makes the job so bad compared to before?

Micro-Management....they created step by step Job-Aids to tell us how to do an install and troubleshoot a service call. If you don't know what step your on when the boss rolls out on you, be prepared for an *** chewing.

What are your favorite and least favorite parts of your job?

My favorite part of the job is going out and putting smiles on peoples faces. It's weird to see people so attached to their TV who would literally get upset when they go a day without it. My least favorite part is having Management tell you to do whatever it takes to hit certain metrics, such as lying to a customer just to make a sale.

Do you get free DISH for being an employee?

Yes, we get free service for being an employee (America's Top 250), but you are required to pay for any additional fee's if you get more than a 2 room hookup with HD or DVR.

so you guys have a quota. if you dont meet $200 sales its over?

The sales quota recently started 3 months ago and management has already threatened to fire us if we do not hit the goal in the near future. So at each and every install/service call, I bring in a screen cleaner ($15) and surge protector ($29) hoping that I can sell something to the customer without being too pushy.

I used to work for Wells Fargo. Definitely the worst company I've ever worked for. I wonder if any companies are getting better to work for than worse. My question: Does Dish have employees do any sort of employee engagement surveys (ours was the gallup q12), and if so, do people to the best of your knowledge answer the questions honestly?

The employee engagement survey was just available for us to take in August. This was the first time that Dish has put out the survey, my assumption is that they caught wind of Glassdoor's survey and wanted to conduct an internal survey. The survey was conducted by www.hrsolutionsinc.com and we were told that it would be completely anonymous. But in order for an employee to take the survey you would have to enter your employee ID #. This caused 80% of the employees in my office to give a good review since they feared losing their jobs talking bad about the company.

Is it ruining your life?

It is ruining my family life having to work long hours 4-5 days a week. We are told not to make any family plans during our work days since you are only allowed to go home until all the appointments are completed. At the moment, I can't find any other job, so it's basically ruining my life.

why don't you go work somewhere else?

I have been looking for a new job within the past year and have been on several interviews, but none have called me back. I even applied for Comcast and was told by a friend that work there that they weren't hiring anybody with a previous installation background.
