Essential Job Summary::
The Lead Dispatcher coordinates and manages daily waste collection operations across multiple sites, ensuring efficient route execution, timely customer service, and compliance with operational standards. This role serves as the central communication hub between drivers, supervisors, and customers, optimizing vehicle deployment and responding to dynamic operational challenges. The Lead Dispatcher is also responsible for promoting and monitoring employee safety and take proactive steps to identify, evaluate and remove safety hazards.
The Lead Dispatcher is a self-directed role and will be responsible for establishing and documenting procedures for live dispatching as well as assisting with onboarding of new dispatch team members.
Essential Job Functions: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.:
Coordinate and oversee dispatch activities for a large group of routes spanning multiple sites, ensuring timely and accurate route execution.
Serve as the primary point of contact for all Drivers as well as other colleagues as our depots and transfer stations.
Analyze route data to identify opportunities for optimization, cost reduction, and service improvement.
Collaborate with Operation Site Managers and customer service to resolve service disruptions and ensure alignment on priorities.
Ensure Drivers and trucks are being utilized to their full potential.
Manage daily truck activity to ensure driver productivity is commensurate with hours worked.
Set up crew sheets and notify all employees of their schedules.
Continuously monitor hours worked and ensure DOT compliance for Drivers.
Continuously monitor Driver performance and provide coaching as well as discipline as necessary.
Ensure compliance with safety policies and protocols as well as federal, state and local regulations.
Perform routine inspections on the trucks and equipment to ensure proper care and routine maintenance.
Review Driver requests for container switches or repairs and enter service tickets into the company database.
Ensure all accidents and injuries are thoroughly documented and distribute reports to the Safety and Risk teams for follow up.
Prepare and Deliver Regular Reports to Senior Management.
Field calls from customer service and handle appropriately.
If call is related to service not performed on a specific site address by speaking with the driver.
Monitor dispatch mailbox and handle requests appropriately.
Monitor system for missed pick ups and disposition them within 60 minutes.
Monitor system for driver progress, comments, skips, extras.
Conduct employee check-in procedure: inspect DVIR for completion, inspect route coversheet for completion of all necessary fields, inspect dump tickets being received, check route has been appropriately closed in the system.
Reschedule any customers that were blocked.
Tag any extra pick-ups in the system, follow-up with exceptions, stop services, missed stops, on call work orders and review pictures.
Close out outstanding tickets in the system
Act on loaded truck list from end of day.
Monitor the call out line and adjust route and scheduling as necessary.
Coordinate with other sites for equipment when necessary.
Monitor and manage idle time.
Ensure accurate geocoding of stops.
Manage tablet inventory and ensure tablet use consistently across all routes
Timely and accurate service alert notifications to customers.
Optimize driver assignments to maximize efficiency and minimize overtime.
Respond appropriately to vehicle breakdowns, accidents, or other field emergencies.
Requirements and Qualifications::
3-8 years of Dispatching experience.
Completion of relevant undergraduate degree or certificate program.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.
Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Strong organization and time management skills.
Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety.
Knowledge of applicable traffic, transportation, and other laws and regulations.
Intermediate to excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Excel.
Defensive Driving (Knowledge of Smith System).
Basic understanding of vehicle operations and limitations.
May require occasional field visits to understand route challenges.
May require early morning, evening, or weekend hours based on operational needs.
Fluency in Spanish preferred not required.
Experience from the waste management, transportation, or related industry.
Experience working with operations software and tablet solution.

Widener University is currently seeking a full-time 1st Shift Dispatcher. This position works primarily indoors, averaging 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day, 8:00AM to 4:00PM. The position reports to the Dispatch Manager. Dispatchers safeguard the University community by expertly coordinating communications among safety personnel, monitoring dispatch systems, and responding to both emergency and non-emergency calls with professionalism and efficiency. Their role is critical in ensuring that every situation whether urgent or routine is managed swiftly, accurately, and with the wellbeing of the community.
Reporting directly to the Dispatch Manager, the Dispatcher plays a vital role in safeguarding the University community by serving as the central hub for safety communications. This position requires coordinating and managing communications among campus safety personnel, monitoring dispatch systems to ensure timely and accurate information flow and responding to emergency and non-emergency calls with professionalism, efficiency, and composure.
This position is essential to maintaining the safety, security, and wellbeing of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Dispatcher will demonstrate strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm under pressure while supporting the University's commitment to a safe and welcoming environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):
Essential Duties:
* Serve as a designated Campus Security Authority (CSA) in compliance with the Clery Act.
* Receive, prioritize, and dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
* Gather accurate details during interactions to ensure timely and appropriate safety responses.
* Operate and manage CAD (computer-aided dispatch), video management, card access, alarm systems, and key control.
* Use two-way radios to dispatch personnel and coordinate responses effectively.
* Work closely with University departments and external agencies to coordinate incident response.
* Manage multiple responsibilities in both high-stress and routine situations.
* Troubleshoot minor issues with dispatch systems and related technology.
* Contact police, fire, or medical services when required.
* Participate in emergency drills and exercises to maintain operational readiness.
Secondary Responsibilities:
* Work flexible or additional shifts as needed to support department operations.
* Support the Office of Campus Safety during University athletic events, ceremonies, and special functions.
* Manage Campus1Card system functions and distribute parking permits.
* Perform other job-related duties as assigned or directed to support departmental needs and align with the mission, values and goals of the Office of Emergency Management/Campus Safety.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):
Required:
* High school diploma or equivalent.
* Valid driver's license.
* Prior experience in customer service or a security-related role.
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage professionally with diverse populations.
* Proficiency in operating computers, two-way radios, and dispatch/security equipment.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills to tactfully and effectively communicate with the university community and colleagues.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
* Demonstrated ability to remain calm and tactful in challenging situations.
* Successful completion of background checks including PA Criminal, PA Child Abuse, and FBI clearance.
Preferred:
* Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, Public Safety, or related field; additional coursework or training in communications, law enforcement, or emergency response.
* Prior experience as a Dispatcher.
* Familiarity with Clery Act reporting requirements and procedures
* Experience working in higher education or school-based environments.
* Background in law enforcement, military, campus or public safety.
* Familiarity with the local community and surrounding areas.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:

* Overseeing the continuance of critical utilities by maintaining economical, reliable and safe operating conditions
* Controlling emergency responses
* Interfacing with customers and field personnel
* Surveying facilities by inspecting retention pounds, pumps houses and substations
* Operating analog, digital and computer terminal equipment to assure proper and reliable exchange schedules when required
* Coordinating necessary station and distribution switching to protect repair personnel
* Isolating and restores to operation faulted circuits and equipment
* Planning and scheduling switching procedures to place new lines and equipment in service, removes lines and equipment out of service
* Maintaining records of orders issued to and reports received from field personnel
* Complying with general and specific instructions, verification, acknowledgment of standards and regulations
* Starting, stopping and transferring control of various units of equipment
Qualifications
* Experience within industrial or utility operations
* Experience and/or knowledge in electromechanical equipment
* Knowledge of meter reading and electrical equipment
* Electrical knowledge in operating electrical disconnects and breakers, as well as monitoring voltage levels and performing substation inspections
* Detail oriented
* Ability to effectively communicate verbally and written
* Experience in Microsoft Suite to include Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
* Safety - focused in recognition of potential dangers and hazards
