The firm is led by John H. (Jack) Hickey. Jack is a frequent lecturer and author of articles on trial technique, litigation in general and maritime law. He is also Board Certified by The Florida Bar in two areas, Civil Trial and Admiralty and Maritime.

The verdicts and settlements which Jack has achieved total more than $100 Million. Many of those verdicts and settlements have been record-breaking for the injuries involved. Last year, we received an arbitration award for a Celebrity Cruise Line seaman. The total of this award with interest was $10.6 Million. Recently, Jack got a verdict of $4.5M for the pain and suffering only of an 89-year-old woman for the 4 years she lived after the car crash which caused her injuries. (The Plaintiff died before the trial of causes unrelated to the car crash). That verdict of pain and suffering of $1Million per year was affirmed on appeal.

Bread for the City's Legal Clinic works to ensure better access to justice for individuals in our nation's capital. The Legal Clinic provides front-line civil legal services primarily in housing, family, immigration, and public benefits law. Our housing law practice includes defending tenants against complaints for possession of real estate, affirmative litigation on behalf of tenants and tenant associations, representation at administrative agencies, and advice and counsel in a variety of housing-related matters.

Position Description :

Bread for the City's housing practice consists of 13 housing attorneys, 1 half-time associate loaned from an area law firm and 2 paralegals. Currently, attorneys are working remotely, providing assistance to tenants through the Landlord Tenant Legal Assistance Network, a collaborative project with 5 other legal services providers in the District. Prior to remote work, our attorneys staffed an office at the Landlord/Tenant Branch of D.C. Superior Court and provided immediate representation to tenants they met for the first time at a critical point in their landlord-tenant case (many of those cases were retained by our clinic for continued representation). Our practice is fast-paced, high-energy and requires the commitment of someone who is able to multitask, as typically attorneys represent 2-3 clients at each in-court appearance. Until March 2020, attorneys in this practice were generally in court 1-2 times per week with the remainder of their time spent completing ongoing casework. Currently, the court is only holding remote hearings, and we are not operating out of the courthouse office. In addition to our representation of tenants in D.C. Superior Court, attorneys may take on administrative hearing work representing participants in federal subsidy programs or at the District's Office of Administrative Hearings.

Bread for the City seeks a dedicated lawyer with 5-7 years of post J.D. experience to assist our three other Supervising Attorneys and Managing Attorney in leading our housing team. In addition to responsibilities around staff development, mentoring and training of staff, loaned associates, pro bono attorneys, and law clerks, supervising attorneys at Bread for the City represent clients and maintain a caseload.

Finally, the Supervising Attorney will help support housing-related advocacy and policy reform efforts in the District through participation in various stakeholder groups, legislative reform efforts and outreach/tenant education events. The Legal Clinic seeks to fill the vacancy as soon as possible.


  • Member of the D.C. Bar or eligible to practice under D.C. Court of Appeals Rule 49(c)(9);
  • At least 5-7 years of post J.D. legal experience including at least 3 years of litigation experience;
  • At least 4 years of housing law expertise/practice, preferably focused in DC;
  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience;
  • Prior experience in a legal services or other public interest setting;
  • Ability to independently perform legal analysis and train staff attorneys in doing the same;
  • Excellent interpersonal and management skills;
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and research skills;

Bread for the City offers a generous benefits package. Details are available at Supervising Attorney salaries start at $75,000 for a minimum of 5 years legal experience and include an additional $1,000 for every additional year of legal experience capped at $5,000 (or 5 additional years). Basic Function

PSCU is looking for a Corporate Attorney to draft, negotiate, analyze, and review contracts. The incumbent will also perform ancillary matters related to contracts, including advising departments on contract interpretation and legal ramifications of contract terms, responding to due diligence requests, and drafting and responding to demand letters. Work closely with school relationship managers regarding year-round recruiting initiatives.
Coordinate interview process for lateral associate candidates and ensure evaluations are submitted timely for hiring partner review. Prepare weekly reports for hiring partners summarizing the lateral recruiting pipeline, including judicial clerks.
Draft annual year-end recruiting report for Hiring Committee. Work with the Senior Manager and Director to finalize report for presentation and distribution.
Train junior team members on department policies, procedures and databases.
Monitor and update applicant information in recruiting database (vi Recruit) as needed.
Position Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree and at least three years of legal recruiting experience in a law firm setting is required.
• Knowledge of attorney recruiting processes.
• Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced and changing work environment.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with all levels of firm personnel, search firm contacts and external vendors.
• Strong attentional to detail, organizational and data-entry skills.
• Strong MSOffice skills needed, specifically Excel. Experience with vi Recruit or another Legal Recruitment database.
• During peak seasons (May through September), flexibility for overtime is necessary.

+ The Utilization Management Nurse Reviewer is responsible for day-to-day timely clinical and service authorization review for medical necessity and decision-making.

+ The Utilization Management Nurse Reviewer works with healthcare providers to ensure appropriate approval of plan benefits. This is accomplished by reviewing clinical information provided to assess medical necessity and the appropriateness of the treatment setting through the application of appropriate policies and criteria (i.e. Milliman). Case assignments may fall in various areas, such as concurrent review of inpatient services, discharge planning, retrospective review, and special needs facilities (SNF), Long Term Acute Care Facilities (LTAC) and Rehabilitation Facilities.

+ Current Active and Unrestricted RN Nursing License required (Associate Degree, Nursing Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Nursing) (If outside of FL, must be compact, multistate RN license.)

+ 2-3 years' utilization management experience in a managed healthcare setting (insurance company e.g. UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Anthem, etc.)

+ Must be familiar/comfortable with InterQual

+ Required experience in utilization management to include utilization review, concurrent review, discharge planning, appeals experience, transitional care and skilled nursing review.

+ Must pass typing test with 40+ WPM
