We enforce animal laws and prioritize public safety while striving to be a community resource providing education and support to the people and animals of Hamilton County. We believe that lifesaving is a community ethic and implement a collaborative, holistic approach to animal sheltering and Dog Warden services. Position Summary The Deputy Dog Warden assists the Chief Dog Warden in enforcing animal control laws, responding to animal-related complaints, and ensuring the health and safety of animals and the public. This position involves investigating reports of animal cruelty, capturing and impounding stray animals, and educating the community on responsible pet ownership. Deputy Dog Wardens will be responsible for compassionate, high-quality, community-based services, working in collaboration with shelter leadership, and protecting animals through the enforcement of state and local animal control laws within the jurisdiction of Hamilton County. Officers must demonstrate knowledge of animal behavior and the ORC 955 and 959. Deputy Dog Wardens report directly to the Field Operations Manager/Lieutenant or assigned Sargent. Duties and responsibilities: Enforcement of the Ohio Revised Code as it relates to animals in Hamilton County: Investigate complaints regarding lost sick/injured, dangerous, or nuisance animals. Patrol, capture, return to owners or impound lost or unlicensed animals. Conduct periodic checks for valid dog licenses, issue citations for violations of relevant laws concerning control and registration of dogs Appear in court when necessary to give testimony in the prosecution of cases. Safely handle and transport animals back to their homes or to the shelter or a local veterinary facility. Provide basic care and first aid to injured or sick animals. Ensure proper documentation and record-keeping of impounded animals. Take required actions to impound, save, or humanely destroy animals as appropriate to circumstances involved Sets and monitors live traps to capture dogs running at large acting as a potential menace and unable to be safely confined Community Interaction: Respond to public inquiries and provide information on animal control regulations. Answer questions from public regarding legal requirements, dog control and effective methods of pet care Conduct or assist in educational programs on responsible pet ownership and animal safety. Mediate disputes between pet owners and neighbors. Complete forms and prepares reports of actions taken for purposes of documentation, legal requirements, statistical records, or as dictated by policy Conduct thorough investigations of animal cruelty, neglect, and bite incidents. Collect and preserve evidence for legal proceedings. Prepare and submit detailed reports on investigations and daily activities. Maintain reports as required by Hamilton County Health Department for quarantine animals Assist in emergency situations involving animals, such as natural disasters or accidents. Work with law enforcement and other agencies during incidents requiring animal control intervention. Clean and provides routine care of equipment and vehicles used to perform duties Other duties and tasks as assigned. Requirements: Ability to operate a Hamilton County vehicle; maintain vehicle for cleanliness, well-equipped, and properly serviced; reports needed repairs to the Chief Dog Warden Ability to operate and dispatch radio and telephone communications systems Ability to be skilled in the use of devices used for capturing stray and wild animals; such as restrain pole, dip net and humane trap Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions Conflict resolution and mediation. In addition to management/supervisory experience in a bargaining unit environment, a Bachelor's degree in a related field of study is preferred, OR an equivalent combination of training/certification, knowledge and/or experience in an animal care or control environment which shows: a proven understanding of related statutes & local ordinances; development of innovative programs to increase live release rates, adoptions & returns to owners; efforts to educate the public on canine care & control matters and “best practices”, and a demonstrated ability to collaborate & communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including but not limited to animal welfare organizations, local law enforcement, volunteers, and the media. General supervision of all staff to include the Deputy Director, Canine Care Center Supervisor, Veterinarian, Canine Control Crew Leader, Canine Control Officers, and Community Outreach Coordinator in the performance of their essential job functions; effectively recommends the hire, transfer, demotion or removal of all employees in the Department; approves leave requests for all employees in the Department; establishes & directs training required for all employees of the Department; uses independent judgment in the areas of grievance adjustment and recommending or taking disciplinary action for all employees in the Department. Oversees the development & implementation of all programs (including, but not limited to, adoption, return to owner, education/awareness, transfer, and volunteer) and operational policies & procedures necessary to carry out the mission of the Department. Stays informed regarding current dog care & control issues and laws as well as the changing needs of the community regarding these issues. Ensures Department's compliance with all applicable federal, state and local dog care and sheltering requirements. Prepares annual department budget for submission to Board of County Commissioners; monitors income and expenditures against approved annual budget/allocation and adjusts programs as needed. Solicits cash and “in-kind” donations to supplement approved budget as needed for programs; identifies potential grant opportunities, applies for grants, and effectively manages grants awarded to the Department. Assists with behavior evaluations, euthanasia and other daily tasks when needed due to staff shortages. Performs chemical capture as needed (when legally allowed). Develops, maintains and communicates to staff and volunteers an accurate and in-depth understanding of laws, regulations and guidelines and current or pending modifications thereof. Daily, you'll have the opportunity to train new dogs -- from puppy age to dogs who need some more reminders. You'll ask their parents about goals and what they want to solve. You'll spend time playing detective -- observing behaviors of your new friend and solving the mysteries of how to train them best. Eventually, you'll use the resources we've already built to craft a plan for how to train that dog and solve their parent's concerns. Don't forget -- sometimes you'll have to train the parents too. Grooming area must be tidy (windows cleaned, floor mopped, computer station cleaned.). Disinfecting drying rooms is crucial. Use disinfectant daily and bleach weekly on all drying rooms. Monitor guest's health while grooming or bathing. Report any unusual concerns to the general manager and the pet parent. Ensure the guest has water and a chance to “go potty” if he or she will be with you for over 2 hours. Follow all standards of safety with regards to handling guests, particularly aggressive guests and escape artists. Pay specific attention to kennel tags, (Meds Person to Feed, Aggressive, Separate for Feeding, etc.). Adhere to pricing guidelines. Get prior approval from the manager or pet's owner before any additional costs are added to service. Effectively communicate to pet care staff that guests are with you. Adhere to procedures in identifying pets while they are with you (groom cards, name bands). Promptly give any laundry to pet care so that it can be cleaned. Consult with other departments.
