With more than 16,275 stores across the country, Dollar General is one of the most profitable stores in the rural United States, with annual revenue hovering around $27.8 billion each year. Founded in 1939, the family-owned retail brand’s success is thanks to its estimated 143,000 American workers, the majority of which are not drug tested.
While the Tennessee-based company continues to run standard background checks before hiring most new employees, the budget retail chain has all but done away with their previous drug testing procedures and no longer screens most of their entry-level employees for marijuana, opioids, or other controlled and illegal substances.
According to employees, in recent years, Dollar General has ceased drug testing applicants for retail positions, like cashiers and store associates, across the continental United States.
While testing is sometimes still used to monitor for impairment following the occurrence of accidents and incidents, it is no longer used as a tool for determining which applicants to hire or fire in most cases. Nor is it used to randomly screen existing employees for signs of substance abuse.
However, drug testing continues to occur for high-level management positions, including store managers, assistant store managers, and key holders, within the retail chain.
As discussed above, the overwhelming majority of Dollar General employees are not required to complete a pre-employment drug test or adhere to any random drug test policies. However, senior store personnel, including managers and employees trusted with store keys, are typically required to pass a drug screening.
In this case, drug testing timelines largely depend on your position within the company. If you apply for an upper-level role or are promoted to a management position, you will more than likely be required to submit to drug testing for both soft drugs, like LSD and marijuana, and hard drugs, like opioids, heroin, and oxycodone.
Drug testing for Dollar General managers typically consists of a urine sample and requires employees to travel to a local clinic or medical office to complete the test.
