The pros for working at Dollar General are meeting interesting people and learning new things for the job.
The cons for working at Dollar General was the constant irrelevant drama between other coworkers and the unorganized and unprofessional management.
My favorite benefit from working at Dollar General was the short distance from home and the friends I made.
As a store manager, you make your own schedule. If you build a great team they become family
No work life balance
None
Very low
Ok I guess
The customers and building lasting relationships with them

Family dollar were I want to work
Family fare o want to work
Family fare were I want to work
Quick advancement opportunities, pay is good (much more than shown on this site).
DG doesn't give enough payroll hours to adequately staff stores in order to get all tasks, duties, etc. done. Apparentlly, its much easier for corporate to complete everything that has to be done onbpaper than it is to actually perform the tasks. Micromanagement is also an issue. Not only do the tasks have to be completed, but after they are done the task has to be completed in the system, and then pictures have to be taken and sent to upper management. Also, too many unnecessary conference calls.
The teledoc benefit is a very good benefit.
Don't really know the CEO. My district manager does a pretty good job considering all she has on her plate.
I woul;d not micromanage the stores/managers who do their job correctrly and efficiently on a consistent basis.
There was not much preparation involved in my interview experience.
I feel that my pay is very competitive as compared to other similar retail positions.
DG does a good job with diverse demographics
I get the most joy from my job when I get paid and go home. I don't work for the fun of it, but working for Dollar General is not so bad.
How close I live.
Lower pay than what's listed here on this site
I help people
I do not like corporate management. They are far too detached from stores and customers.
Hours. One person per hour opened is not enough
I dressed appropriately
My pay is extremely lower than industry average. And I'm told I can not get raise because I have reached top.
They are way too concerned with this, just raise pay and we can have better qualified candidates to choose from. Right now pay is so low. Hardly any applicants at all
Helping people.
The customers are the best part of my job. I love getting to know each one and being able to help them.
The pay, they want salary level work for barely minimum wage. There is no incentive to work hard or even take a promotion. If I'm making almost $12 as a cashier, and I move up a level, they don't want to give you more money. I was offered not even $1 to take on 10 times the work and responsibilities. That is insulting. Especially considering I have plenty of experience in retail. Right after I was offered less than a dollar raise to be promoted from within, they hired someone else to fill the position that had zero knowledge of retail and had to be trained for everything and started them out at $15/hr. That's OVER $3 more an hour than they wanted to give me, whom had plenty of experience and already worked there. Needless to say, I'm currently looking for a new job that is going to value me and my time and at least have enough respect to give me a decent offer. Best part, I had to pretty much train the new hire to do the job that I turned down.
There really aren't any worth staying for. They do offer vision and dental insurance that you can pay for. Part time and full time employees are eligible. But vision and dental for part time people only covers preventative, so, really not worth it. If you dont come in knowing the mananger/s or being related to them, they don't want to pay you and they don't want to even give you hours. They give all the hours to managers and friends of the managers.
I don't. The Dollar General CEO and all of the others at that head table need to get off their high horse and do under cover boss in their own stores and see what exactly it is like for cashiers and managers. They need to take time away from their families and lives to run a store and get paid barely anything and threatened with their job if they don't keep their mouth shut and dp as told.
Higher ups need to come from the sale floor. Not a NY penthouse. Maybe then Dollar General would be able to live up to what it claims to be.
I didn't. I scheduled one and was hired on the spot. All they wanted to hear was that I liked to stay busy. That translated to someone who they can walk all over they thought.
It's way below average. 25 hours a week barely covers my gas to get back and forth.
I think DolGen talks a good talk, but they definitely don't live up to it.
The customers. They are literally the only thing keeping me there at this point. We have primarily elderly customers in our area and the other employees and managers won't even be bothered to hekp them or they get attitude and treat them like crap.

Great management fast customer service
I really don't know for sure
Retirement 401k medical
The only reason I haven’t left that place is because of the team that I’m being in charge of. My 3-6 cashiers depend on me to keep their lines moving fast enough. I like knowing somebody depends on me enough to get them out of a situation.
You get interrupted breaks if your in any type of management, you only get a raise once a year and it’s only 25cents and then when the new year comes around you only get an extra 25 cents if your a management while the others make minimum wage. I’m a lead/manager cashiers manager basically. I make 13.75 an hour and I have been with the company for 3 years. Corporate keeps making changes every couple days and nobody knows about anything until corporate shows up randomly for inspections. Freight stacked to the ceiling rolltainers everywhere. Boss take advantage everytime she can.
My best friend
Close to home and working alone some
I don’t hate it in most day
Doing it like a team effort
Customers and store manager
Dm and regional manager are horrible
Insurance and two weeks paid vacation after two years
Provided you're lucky, good coworkers and management. Inclusive environment.
Very stressful. 2 people work at a time if you're lucky. Too much stuff needs to be done with limited manpower. Potentially dangerous since its low security
They're so desperate they give me all the hours I want.
Only plus is coworkers I like
Upper level management all play games and lie to get ahead
Employee benefits are minimum
You can wear jeans and a black shirt, tennis shoes
Once hired they don't want to give you any hours. There are never enough employees to keep up with the weekly truck that comes, and price changes, and and sales, and customer service. They want the store clean but only allow 15 minutes after close to do it. That also includes the managers nightly paperwork and store deposit.
Walking distance from my house
Most of my coworkers were very good people and I liked working with them very much.
There are few options to move within the company, few benefits unless you are management and, as unfortunate as it is, recently many of the few options available have become less.
When I first started, the staff rotated weekends. That benefit has now become unavailable to the staff.
I love interacting with people and helping them with whatever they need and it was pretty laid back
The managers were rude and find always do their job.
The education and rent insurance for my apartment
I enjoyed the customers and experience gained in the field of customer service. It helped me confident in how I handle interactions with the public in my current job
The pay was terrible, and management was worse. Hard to get over the bare minimum hours for any benefits.
I had set closing hours and knew when I would be home or make other plans.
Plan O Grams and seasonal was my favorite
Ran the store for 2 months and went through a remodel and never received any help from upper management. They don’t care about anyone but own pocket
None
I love doing planograms, seasonal sets and stocking
Getting treated badly by managers/upper management. They don't care about their employees.
Being able to walk outside at any time for a moment to catch my breath
The managers and coworkers were like family.
Sometimes we get really busy with customers and get behind in stocking but always catch back up.
Every once in a while we would get 30% off any purchase discount.
Great work environment
I was contracted by a Atlanta Ga based company contracted by Dollar General. I would have liked to be employed directly thru dg.
Flexibility and great manager
Counting money and paperwork
Rude customer, poor management and not being heard
Friendly coworkers
Some of the customers were really fun to talk to, as they had a lot of interesting stories to tell.
The management was really bad.
I had something to do besides sit at home.
I really like the experience of being a store manager and getting to lead a team to success
Work life balance, working 14 hours a day, 7 days a week
Health and dental insurance, decent salary
My Customers
Pay, treatment of employees from corporate
Customer interaction
I became a keyholder/co manager
Managers were not cooperating with me on hours and hourly pay.
I got to learn how to be a keyholder/co manager
having a flow of income
inconstancy with hours, constantly having to train new team members only for them to not show up and eventually quit. leaving me with more work/ responsibility that I'm being paid for.
I didn't use any
The customers & community.
Upper management & corporate office want you to perform ridiculous amount of work with no budget & wants you to work 24/7. They do NOT care about work life balance.
All their benefits are not good
What I liked about working with Dollar General is the Salary Pay and getting paid every Friday.
The work and life balance its not for a family person as a store manager. you work 6 to 7 days a week
Discount Perks for Cell Phone
Working to serve people (manager)
Poor regional Managers
Sales working with people
It’s good for people seeking part time
Some managers don’t raise your pay like they should. Even full time people don’t get much hours like you would like.
You can leave the store during breaks
The moving around not being in one spot. I also like the money handling and dealing with customers.
Dollar general has really bad management.
401k
I loved the customers and my job in general. The work flow was great and the it was a very fun loving environment.
My manager was sexually harassing me.
I like my manager as well as my district manager. Also like most of my coworkers. Like helping my customers.
I don't like the pay for what and how much I do. They should recognize the employees that bust their butts making them their billions of dollars! Without us, they would not have this company!!!!
I don't have a favorite perk or benefit because there really isn't anything great about their benefits. They don't have any perks for their employees besides maybe once a year they give 30% off 1 purchase.
I liked that my boss created a flexible schedule
Terrible management
Becoming a manager
Decent pay, decent breaks, decent benefits, company parties
Heat, hard labor for most, rude management, lazy coworkers
Several breaks during shift
The work pace keeps your time interesting. Dependent on location, the management will make your time there enjoyable or not. Helping customers is satisfying work.
The pay is not very livable below the assistant manager position and can not really be more than a part time gig otherwise. The tools provided for the job are average and some issues can not be resolved due to a dated Point-of-Sale system which is still being used and updated with modern internet features, as such some things do not work correctly.
Flexible schedule
