The customers are the best part of my job. I love getting to know each one and being able to help them.
The pay, they want salary level work for barely minimum wage. There is no incentive to work hard or even take a promotion. If I'm making almost $12 as a cashier, and I move up a level, they don't want to give you more money. I was offered not even $1 to take on 10 times the work and responsibilities. That is insulting. Especially considering I have plenty of experience in retail. Right after I was offered less than a dollar raise to be promoted from within, they hired someone else to fill the position that had zero knowledge of retail and had to be trained for everything and started them out at $15/hr. That's OVER $3 more an hour than they wanted to give me, whom had plenty of experience and already worked there. Needless to say, I'm currently looking for a new job that is going to value me and my time and at least have enough respect to give me a decent offer. Best part, I had to pretty much train the new hire to do the job that I turned down.
There really aren't any worth staying for. They do offer vision and dental insurance that you can pay for. Part time and full time employees are eligible. But vision and dental for part time people only covers preventative, so, really not worth it. If you dont come in knowing the mananger/s or being related to them, they don't want to pay you and they don't want to even give you hours. They give all the hours to managers and friends of the managers.
I don't. The Dollar General CEO and all of the others at that head table need to get off their high horse and do under cover boss in their own stores and see what exactly it is like for cashiers and managers. They need to take time away from their families and lives to run a store and get paid barely anything and threatened with their job if they don't keep their mouth shut and dp as told.
Higher ups need to come from the sale floor. Not a NY penthouse. Maybe then Dollar General would be able to live up to what it claims to be.
I didn't. I scheduled one and was hired on the spot. All they wanted to hear was that I liked to stay busy. That translated to someone who they can walk all over they thought.
It's way below average. 25 hours a week barely covers my gas to get back and forth.
I think DolGen talks a good talk, but they definitely don't live up to it.
The customers. They are literally the only thing keeping me there at this point. We have primarily elderly customers in our area and the other employees and managers won't even be bothered to hekp them or they get attitude and treat them like crap.

Quick advancement opportunities, pay is good (much more than shown on this site).
DG doesn't give enough payroll hours to adequately staff stores in order to get all tasks, duties, etc. done. Apparentlly, its much easier for corporate to complete everything that has to be done onbpaper than it is to actually perform the tasks. Micromanagement is also an issue. Not only do the tasks have to be completed, but after they are done the task has to be completed in the system, and then pictures have to be taken and sent to upper management. Also, too many unnecessary conference calls.
The teledoc benefit is a very good benefit.
Don't really know the CEO. My district manager does a pretty good job considering all she has on her plate.
I woul;d not micromanage the stores/managers who do their job correctrly and efficiently on a consistent basis.
There was not much preparation involved in my interview experience.
I feel that my pay is very competitive as compared to other similar retail positions.
DG does a good job with diverse demographics
I get the most joy from my job when I get paid and go home. I don't work for the fun of it, but working for Dollar General is not so bad.
The only reason I haven’t left that place is because of the team that I’m being in charge of. My 3-6 cashiers depend on me to keep their lines moving fast enough. I like knowing somebody depends on me enough to get them out of a situation.
You get interrupted breaks if your in any type of management, you only get a raise once a year and it’s only 25cents and then when the new year comes around you only get an extra 25 cents if your a management while the others make minimum wage. I’m a lead/manager cashiers manager basically. I make 13.75 an hour and I have been with the company for 3 years. Corporate keeps making changes every couple days and nobody knows about anything until corporate shows up randomly for inspections. Freight stacked to the ceiling rolltainers everywhere. Boss take advantage everytime she can.
My best friend
The customers, they were more understanding about what the employees were going through.
Um, where do I start? The ARE NOT I REPEAT ARE NOT a family based company like the say they are in one of their little "CBL'S" they have you take. By which if you don't take you can be written up and or fired for. They treat the employees like crap. No one at all gets proper support/ training. They have unrealistic task and views on how thing should be done. When every person works different. It's called diversity which is one of the things the preach about.
Paid vacation when they allowed us to take one.
Great Customers
High expectations - Low pay So much to get done and not enough hours/people
Customers
It's a job
Pay, hours, timeline for things needing to be done, not enough hours to be properly staffed, driveline never showing up
There are no perks / benefits
Nothing they seem a bit incompetent.
Reassessments of financial flow from top to bottom
I didn't
Low
Could care less I just want to be able to keep the lights on and food in the fridge
Going home
Customers are amazing here and patient The team I have is amazing
District Manger is rude snapping all the time and plays favorites. Not a good leader
OT benefits
NA
Leadership needs to do better and need more Leadership
Over the phone I got the job

NA
NA I don’t really have Joy it could be better if are Distract manger was more of a people person, but she has no people skills and she’s very demanding and not helpful whatsoever
The pros for working at Dollar General are meeting interesting people and learning new things for the job.
The cons for working at Dollar General was the constant irrelevant drama between other coworkers and the unorganized and unprofessional management.
My favorite benefit from working at Dollar General was the short distance from home and the friends I made.
Çustomers, people I work with with
Everything including pay, hours, trying to get employees working one day a week, inconsiderate, part time Keyholder has no one to cover for them. Plus so much more
My customers.
Nothing
Everything
I didn't, I got hired without being interviewed. Which isn't the problem, the problem was not being told hold things operates there
Getting basic experience working a job that requires a lot of effort. This job made me better at multitasking a lot of things at once. Learning how to help out customers and problem-solving, at work.
People not showing up to work. The low pay. Working all holidays except for Christmas.
Vacation days
As a store manager, you make your own schedule. If you build a great team they become family
No work life balance
None
Very low
Ok I guess
The customers and building lasting relationships with them
Customer are amazing
Dollar general does not care about there people they should not be working by themselves in a store. I was robbed at gun point and they don’t care. They also need to close stores earlier than 10
Insurance
Well the fact that he step away and then stepped back up is not saying much, but they are completely confused
Think about the employees first they are the ones who maintain the stores. Give more hours and no one should ever be in there by there self
Good I wished they did more for all employees
Okay
My peers and customers are the light of my day
Grearf for life n job n money n friends
Was very happy part time n had a job my family loved me I was on time neat and did my job carefully
I was always a team player n ready to work
It's was amazing so was the store hiree n I can be an assist to family fare as a stockeri prepared for family fare interview by grabbingy resume looking at store n applying
Family dollar were I want to work
Family fare o want to work
Family fare were I want to work
How close I live.
Lower pay than what's listed here on this site
I help people
I do not like corporate management. They are far too detached from stores and customers.
Hours. One person per hour opened is not enough
I dressed appropriately
My pay is extremely lower than industry average. And I'm told I can not get raise because I have reached top.
They are way too concerned with this, just raise pay and we can have better qualified candidates to choose from. Right now pay is so low. Hardly any applicants at all
Helping people.

My best friend
There are none
Everything. Management. Pay. Workload. Labor hour shortage. Skeleton crews
Nothing.
Nothing. They’re greedy
Probably form a union if they wouldn’t fire you for it. They push anti-union propaganda
I didn’t. I walked in
Well, they made 2.2 billion last year and as a ASM I made 13.50/he
They put on a good front but behind closed doors they’re homophobic/transphobic and racist
Clocking out
It is a job that I find enjoyable and I like my co workers.
I need more compensation or more ability to advance
Matching a % of retirement
Working helping public
Management wasn't helpful in training
Income and working with public
Close to home and working alone some
I don’t hate it in most day
Doing it like a team effort
The only thing I liked about worrying there was the people I worked with.
I didn't like that it was no life and work balance the pay is not enough for the amount of work they want you to complete
None
Customers and store manager
Dm and regional manager are horrible
Insurance and two weeks paid vacation after two years
Provided you're lucky, good coworkers and management. Inclusive environment.
Very stressful. 2 people work at a time if you're lucky. Too much stuff needs to be done with limited manpower. Potentially dangerous since its low security
They're so desperate they give me all the hours I want.
Customers were awesome. Manager was great but young.
No career growth, I had to close the store every night. There was no alternative schedule.
the people. being a sales associate. i like restocking because it makes the time go by faster
i have no reasons to why i dont like working there. i actually enjoy working there i'm just trying to find better
to be honest i really dont have a favorite perk or a benifit right now at this moment
The customers are amazing that's what makes me come to work everyday
Schedule and availability
Nothing
I loved my customers
I didn't like the false promise of advancement
I loved being able to make customers happy
Learned the skills it took to manage a store!
Did not like the retail business!
Good money with advancement.
Only plus is coworkers I like
Upper level management all play games and lie to get ahead
Employee benefits are minimum
The job itself is enjoyable and helping customers is rewarding.
Management, low pay, no advancement opportunities for health benefits and you're very much unappreciated and treated like your expendable
The customers
The customer's and a couple of my fellow employee's.
New Mgr is rude and always has a nasty attitude with the employee's with the exception of her picks and the kiss up's
My Elderly customer's are the best. As well as the Asst Mgr is awsome and easier to talk to and much more approachable
You can wear jeans and a black shirt, tennis shoes
Once hired they don't want to give you any hours. There are never enough employees to keep up with the weekly truck that comes, and price changes, and and sales, and customer service. They want the store clean but only allow 15 minutes after close to do it. That also includes the managers nightly paperwork and store deposit.
Walking distance from my house
Most of my coworkers were very good people and I liked working with them very much.
There are few options to move within the company, few benefits unless you are management and, as unfortunate as it is, recently many of the few options available have become less.
When I first started, the staff rotated weekends. That benefit has now become unavailable to the staff.
The customers, they were more understanding about what the employees were going through.
Um, where do I start? The ARE NOT I REPEAT ARE NOT a family based company like the say they are in one of their little "CBL'S" they have you take. Paid vacation when they allowed us to take one.
Supporting the racist government that puts guns over children's lives.
Not having to shop there.
Meeting my customers, helping customers, learning the business.
Not enough hours
Health Care choices
I love interacting with people and helping them with whatever they need and it was pretty laid back
The managers were rude and find always do their job.
The education and rent insurance for my apartment
Not a single thing, this company is the worst
It's a 43billon Dollar company and they pay there employees 11 dollars an hour
There are no benefits or perks for working at dollar general
There are none
They work you full time while labeling you part time and not paying enough
This is the single worst company I've ever worked for
my hours get cut all the time due to company not having hours to give but yet continue to hire people.
I love working around people and helping customers
There's nothing that I dislike about working
Serving the customers
I was a shift lead.
Not enough hours.
I was able to run my own shift and help the store more then I would be able to by just being a cashier.
Learning new skills and overall improving and seeing what type of environment I was in. Making connections with new people.
Scheduling was my least favorite because I applied at this job to feel a sense of purpose or distraction and it felt as if I went there to their benefit and was only needed a few times a week (4-8 hours/week)
Discounts on some holidays
My employees and customers
Working hours o/t and not getting paid extra, company doesn’t care about their employees
Made connections with our small town and didn’t have to drive far
I enjoyed the customers and experience gained in the field of customer service. It helped me confident in how I handle interactions with the public in my current job
The pay was terrible, and management was worse. Hard to get over the bare minimum hours for any benefits.
I had set closing hours and knew when I would be home or make other plans.
Plan O Grams and seasonal was my favorite
Ran the store for 2 months and went through a remodel and never received any help from upper management. They don’t care about anyone but own pocket
None
At the time the customers
People that didn't want to work
Making a difference to our region making our store the best
I love doing planograms, seasonal sets and stocking
Getting treated badly by managers/upper management. They don't care about their employees.
Being able to walk outside at any time for a moment to catch my breath
Interacting with customers on a daily basis, making customers feel welcomed and making them smile.
Wasn’t appreciated for all the hard work and long hours I did every week. Was never thanked for going above and beyond every day
