What is it like to work at Dollar Tree

What Do You Like About Working There?

I was a temporary employee and the work was fairly easy. I did stocking and worked the register. I prefer stocking do to me being an introvert and was able to work efficiently with barely being bothered unless the front needed help. .. Show More

What DON'T You Like About Working There?

The store is always dirty and management suck. The Managers didn't know who was supposed to work what hours and I applied to be a stocker mostly but I ended up on the register most of the time. Some days I would be ask to stay past then when I was suppose to due to people co workers not showing up. But I don't blame them. .. Show More

What Are Your Favorite Benefits/Perks?

My favorite perk was the openness when it came to breaks. Managers allowed breaks if you asked and actually needed it. .. Show More

What Do You Like About Working There?

Meeting people in my community, especially the older ones who seem to appreciate my smile and courteousness... Show More

What DON'T You Like About Working There?

There arent any cameras and people know it and they shoplift regularly. The pay is $8.50 an hour while other similar stores start at $10 or more. I've been there over a year and haven't had a raise yet. I'm told that I will be evaluated and given a raise possibly less than 10 cents. I work hard and I'm never late. It doesnt sound fair... Show More

What Are Your Favorite Benefits/Perks?

My fellow associates are pleasant and diverse. A gay man, a married lesbian, a manager who is the youngest person of the 7 people working there, and mixed races. We have interesting conversations and we all get along well and work well together... Show More

Has there ever been a repeat customer for the one dollar steaks? Have you tried the steaks there? Any fights ever break out in your store?

Oh yeah, there's two in fact. One named Christoph, he's a really cool Russian guy. And the other I'm not so acquainted with. Not yet, but I've had many intentions to do so. Ohhhh yeah, many. In one instance two homeless men where fighting over a few cans of Pringles and it got bloody, the police where called.

What's your salary? Do people there have degrees? You thinking of dating any of your co workers? Why does it attract very few male employees?

I think the number of female employees has detoured any potential male employees. But because they had so few men and they wanted diversity they hired me on the spot and got me working that day even though I had no previous experience before this job. It's $10.30 an hour which is above minimum wage, but we're right on the other side of the city limits and just on the other side has a minimum wage of $11/hr, though I tool the guaranteed job with lots of hours because they also don't have many cashiers so I get lots of hours. Few do other than one with a nursing degree, but she doesn't wish to pursue anymore and is now the third in charge at the store. A good portion of them though including myself are going to college simultaneously to get a degree. I think I've answered all your questions though out of order, let me know if I missed anything.

What would you buy there if you didn't work there?

Some of the best things to buy at a Dollar Tree are bread (Newman's Own, Sunbeam, etc.), movie candy, Utz chips (regional), some cleaning products, and some frozen/refrigerated items.

Did people use food stamps often? I recently discovered our local Dollar Tree accepts them.

Very often. There are three sides to this story. First is people who really don't know better. (And this really extends into the second side.) In my town this was mostly made up of recent immigrants and refugees. They saw that things were sold for a dollar and thought that it would stretch their SNAP dollars. The second side is "perceived value," this is the side that makes Walmart successful. People think that because it's cheap, they're getting a good value. While they may be getting bread much cheaper than they would in a grocery store, they are also paying substantially more for other basic items. That being said, I never saw anyone proudly extend their SNAP debit card. Finally there's the corporate side. Discount retailers, including Walmart, benefit from SNAP benefits being spent there. Many of them spend a lot of money lobbying for increased benefits for individuals. In a more sinister way, they also spend a lot of money keeping snack foods and junk foods on the list of approved SNAP products.
