Atter's Market located at 212 West St, which had been in operation since 1909, also expanded to add to its growing clientele.
Donelan's Supermarkets was founded in 1948 in Littleton, MA by John E. Donelan.
Further up West Street was the old United Cooperative Society of Fitchburg, better known as the Co-op, which opened on a smaller scale at 78 West St in 1948.
It was Gardner's first shopping headquarters, and opened for the first time on April 27, 1950.
Downtown Gardner had the City Market Foodliner at 86 Parker St, which opened in 1956 at the former A & P location.
The First National remained at its City Hall Avenue location until 1964, when it moved to the newly-opened Gardner Plaza on Pearson Boulevard.

In August 1992, Donelan's opened its fourth location in Groton, MA.
In August 1996, Donelan's relocated its Acton store from South Acton to its present location in Gould Plaza.
2009 also saw a small renovation to our Pepperell location with new checkouts, a customer friendly courtesy booth, a wing bar, and expanded bakery section.
