Douglass Community Services company history timeline

1962

In 1962 the Association shifted its chief focus from recreational activities to confronting the social problems facing Northside residents.

1963

In 1963, the Douglass faced a “critical decision” about its future, according to the Kalamazoo Gazette article published on the organization’s 50th anniversary.

1966

One of the more large-scale programs to emerge from this era was INTREFOL, launched in 1966.

1969

1971

In April 1971, the first month that materials were lent from the library, only 37 books were checked out.

1972

In 1972, the Douglass Library officially became a branch of the Champaign Public Library.

1975

In December 1975, the old center was razed and construction began on the new Douglass Center.

THE DOUGLASS CENTER AS IT NOW STANDS In 1975, despite the community’s need for a more diverse facility, the park board claimed it could only provide a building for a gymnasium, “because of lack of funds,” and announced that the old Douglass Center would be demolished.

1982

After working out of several locations in the northside neighborhood, the Douglass moved to its current facility on W. Paterson in 1982.

1984

The building opened in 1984.

1998

In 1998 an organization of retirees, motivated by fond memories, purchased the Douglass Community Association’s old building on Ransom Street from the Mount Zion Baptist Church.

1999

By 1999 the group had spent $15,000 on an interior clean-up and a further $104,000 on a new roof.

2010

In February 2010 the institution celebrated its 90th anniversary with a banquet featuring a keynote address by Elson Floyd.

2013

In 2013, the Douglass faced financial struggles when a major funding source was cut.

2014

By May 2014, it had raised more than $500,000 in nine months.

And in July 2014, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation gave the Douglass a $297,000 grant to assist with youth programs and rebuilding the infrastructure of the association’s facility at 1000 W. Paterson St

2018

Ellis was named director in 2018.

2019

During a January 2019 cold spell that closed many businesses and schools across the state for at least a week, the Douglass opened its doors as an emergency warming shelter.
