Program Dates: 07/20/2026 - 07/15/2029 DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital is a non-profit, AAHA-accredited, VECCS Level 1-certified, 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital located in beautiful Portland, Oregon. We operate two state-of-the-art facilities, one newly constructed as of November 2024, and house a comprehensive team of specialists in Cardiology, Neurology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Oncology, Diagnostic Imaging, Exotics, Hospice, Rehab, and Pain Management. We see one of the highest ER caseloads in the country and maintain a dedicated ICU for hospitalized patients. Our residency program offers Oregon's only ECC residency, designed to train highly proficient, multi-faceted critical care specialists through an exceptional blend of clinical experience, mentorship, and teaching. Program Overview The ECC Residency at DoveLewis is a three-year program focused on developing expertise in emergency and intensive care management. Residents gain extensive experience managing critical patients, participating in advanced procedures, and collaborating with multiple specialties in a busy, state-of-the-art hospital environment. The program emphasizes: * Strong mentorship and direct specialist engagement, including 7-day-a-week Criticalist coverage * Extensive exposure to complex and unique patient cases * Didactic education and teaching opportunities * Cross-training in endoscopy, ultrasound, surgery, and CRRT/TPE * Collaborative case management with board-certified specialists across multiple disciplines Residents will become adept at patient triage, diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making, and client communication, preparing them for success as boarded critical care specialists and future leaders in ECC medicine. This is a true rotating internship including a strong foundation in Emergency Critical Care and rotations through all of our in-hospital specialties: Cardiology, Neurology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Oncology, Diagnostic Imaging, Exotics, Hospice, Rehab, and Management. The primary goals for this program are to help interns become competent and skilled at patient assessment and care, build diagnostic and treatment plans, learn how to navigate through complex in-hospital cases, and communicate effectively with clients and colleagues. We emphasize mentorship, teamwork, compassion, direct support, didactic education, and primary patient care. We view an internship as an invaluable step to becoming a successful veterinarian capable of adapting to many roles in the future. Former DoveLewis interns have gone on to advanced residency training in multiple specialties, and careers in specialty, emergency, and general medicine practice. Participate in continuing education, research, and case discussions to advance veterinary cardiology knowledge.
