    The role - what you'll do Barr is seeking an engineer, geologist, or hydrogeologist with specialized expertise in sediment remediation to join our Seattle office. In this hybrid role, you will support the Assessment and Remediation business unit and lead work on complex sediment remediation projects. Assignments will include leading activities associated with designing and managing remedial dredging programs; leading sediment investigations; developing conceptual site models; preparing feasibility studies and alternatives analyses; performing remedial design (including capping, dredging, and bank stabilization); coordinating structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, and water-quality evaluations; and supporting the permitting and implementation of sediment remedies. Responsibilities may also include managing multidisciplinary teams; preparing technical work plans, reports, and design packages; developing cost estimates and scopes of work; coordinating with contractors during construction; monitoring field activities (such as turbidity, structural movement, and geotechnical performance); and summarizing results for regulatory review. Work will also involve regulatory and stakeholder engagement with agencies such as the U.S. EPA, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state environmental departments, and local entities. The person in this position may help lead business development efforts including building and maintaining client relationships, contributing to marketing campaigns, performing client outreach, fostering project opportunities, contributing to proposals and presentations, professional networking, and sharing Barr's sediment-remediation capabilities with existing and potential clients. Your impact - key responsibilities * Technical knowledge: lead complex sediment investigation, feasibility study, and remedial design efforts using advanced technical expertise. Apply a strong understanding of dredging, capping, geotechnical and hydraulic considerations, contaminated sediment behavior, and regulatory frameworks to deliver effective, site-specific solutions. * Project management: oversee multidisciplinary teams and manage scopes, schedules, budgets, and quality for sediment remediation projects. Support permitting, stakeholder coordination, and construction-phase services while providing mentorship and guidance to junior staff. * Business development: identify and pursue new sediment remediation opportunities, contribute to proposals and marketing efforts, and actively participate in networking to grow Barr's presence in sediment, riverine, and waterfront remediation markets. * Problem solving: evaluate complex physical, chemical, and biological processes influencing sediment behavior; integrate large data sets; and develop creative, compliant, and constructible remediation strategies. Anticipate and navigate technical, regulatory, and logistical challenges throughout the project lifecycle. * Communication: develop high-quality technical deliverables, including work plans, feasibility studies, design packages, and construction documentation. Communicate complex sediment-related information effectively to clients, contractors, regulators, and diverse internal and external audiences. * Interpersonal savvy: build and sustain strong relationships with clients, regulatory personnel, and internal teams. About the opportunity * Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Seattle, Washington, office. * Travel expectation: willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (including up to 10%; project needs will vary seasonally and over time). * Work environment: ability to work in locations that may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. About you - required core competencies * Education: bachelor's degree in environmental, civil, or geological engineering; geology; hydrogeology; or a related discipline. * Experience: 8 or more years of relevant experience, including demonstrated experience in sediment remediation, dredging, feasibility studies, or sediment remedial design. * Licenses/certifications: Registered Professional Engineer or Geologist or the ability to become registered within one year. * Software: strong computer skills, including word processing and use of spreadsheets. Familiarity with the Microsoft Suite. * Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. * Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future. Helpful additional experience (not required) * Master's degree in engineering, geology, or a related discipline. * 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) certification. * Previous consulting experience, particularly in sediment remediation or waterfront and/or riverine systems. * Experience with sediment transport modeling, cap modeling, or construction-phase monitoring. * Registered certified consultant. Compensation: Anticipated range of $115,000-$155,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Provide technical expertise in aquatic and terrestrial wildlife ecology, including fieldwork for wildlife habitat assessments and report preparation. Lead post-construction performance monitoring for fish passage, wetlands, and vegetation, and prepare annual monitoring reports. What You Bring: Bachelor s degree in Biology, Wildlife or Fisheries, Ecology, or a related field; Master s degree preferred. Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification preferred. 5-10 years of professional experience in wetlands, including working knowledge of salmonid ecology in freshwater and estuarine environments in the Pacific Northwest and Puget Sound region. You will serve as a primary liaison with federal, state, and local agencies on environmental permitting and compliance matters, and lead impact analyses to inform project design and regulatory compliance. You will collaborate with Otaks multidisciplinary teams to support mitigation planning, design, and installation. Project work includes fish passage restoration, transportation, third-party peer reviews, linear utilities, parks and trails, and policy analysis. Project locations span rural and suburban or urban areas, road corridors, and agricultural lands throughout the Pacific Northwest. This position includes a mix of field work and hybrid remote and in-office work, and is based out of our Redmond or Everett, Washington office. Travel to Southwest Washington and Oregon is expected on a project-by-project basis. What You'll Do: * Manage environmental tasks and projects in freshwater and shoreline environments. * Lead wetland and stream OHWM delineations using the USACE 1987 Manual and applicable Regional Supplements, complete wetland ratings and functional assessments, and prepare associated reports. * Conduct OHWM delineations in both marine and freshwater systems. * Prepare wetlands, streams, and Fish and Wildlife Habitat Conservation Areas (FWHCA) critical areas reports for compliance with local Washington codes. * Develop regulatory compliance strategies for projects and permit applications (e.g., JARPA, SEPA, Shoreline), including use of streamlined permitting processes. * Prepare Biological Assessments to support Section 7 ESA compliance. * Support ecological restoration and mitigation planning and design. * Prepare SEPA Checklists and NEPA Categorical Exclusion documentation. * Provide technical expertise in aquatic and terrestrial wildlife ecology, including fieldwork for wildlife habitat assessments and report preparation. This may include stream habitat monitoring, fish passage assessments, water quality analysis, impact analyses, and restoration design. * Lead post-construction performance monitoring for fish passage, wetlands, and vegetation, and prepare annual monitoring reports. What You Bring: * Bachelors degree in Biology, Wildlife or Fisheries, Ecology, or a related field; Masters degree preferred. * Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification preferred. * 5-10 years of professional experience in wetlands, including working knowledge of salmonid ecology in freshwater and estuarine environments in the Pacific Northwest and Puget Sound region. Time spent in a Masters degree program may be included toward total experience. * Demonstrated ability to prioritize, manage, and deliver multiple projects with concurrent deadlines. * Professional experience supporting aquatic restoration projects, including design, implementation, and performance monitoring. * Strong understanding of federal and Washington State regulatory compliance processes, including preparation of JARPAs for USACE and WDFW permitting. * Experience completing wildlife habitat studies and impact assessments for public and private development projects, including fish passage, stream restoration, linear transportation, and publicly funded capital improvement projects. * Background with NEPA compliance processes for publicly funded projects preferred. * WSDOT- or ODOT-certified Biological Assessment Author preferred. * Ability to participate in business development activities such as proposal preparation, interviews, and client relationship management. * Ability to travel occasionally between Otak offices and to project sites. * Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions and navigate slopes and rough terrain along rivers, streams, shorelines, and transportation corridors.
