DPR Construction company history timeline

1990

The DPR story begins in July of 1990.

In July of 1990, armed with $750,000 of pooled resources, three construction industry veterans, Doug Woods, Peter Nosler and Ron Davidowski (the D, the P and the R), co-founded DPR and set out to do something different in an industry traditionally resistant to change.

In 1990, the founders of DPR felt it was important to do something different and to push the boundaries of our industry: they believed in being surprising, personal, family-like BUT not, unlike their previous professional experience, family-owned.

1992

A significant point in the history of DPR was a meeting in the spring of 1992 with Jim Collins, who was a Stanford professor at the time and now is a management consultant and best-selling author.

1994

In 1994, DPR landed a $43 million wafer fabrication project in Los Angeles for Rockwell International.

1997

Since 1997, it has continued to rank in the top 50 general contractors in the country.

2000

By the year 2000, DPR had hit $1.9 billion in revenue and grown from a company of 13 to nearly 700 full-time staff and employed another 700 craft people in the field.

The company identified “Ever Forward Champions” in each regional office to help lead an effort to implement a sustainable, consistent process. As a result, DPR launched our first formal Innovation initiative in 2000.

2001

2001: Working with the world’s leading microprocessor manufacturer, DPR completes its biggest project to date—and one of the world’s largest construction projects at the time—in 18 months.

2004

2004: California Governor Schwarzeneggar awards DPR the Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for its Sacramento office building, the first privately-owned LEED certified building in California’s Central Valley.

2005

2005: The Banner Estrella Medical Center, DPR’s first greenfield hospital, wins top honors in the Modern Healthcare Design Awards.

2006

2006: DPR is featured in “Mavericks at Work: Why the Most Original Minds in Business Win.”

2008

2008: The DPR Foundation is established to help disadvantaged children and, to date, has contributed $8.8 million to organizations across the country.

2010

In 2010 DPR had grown into a multi-billion-dollar organization with long-standing relationships with some of the world’s most admired companies.

2010: DPR completes its new San Diego office building, which is the first and only commercial office in San Diego to achieve both LEED-NC Platinum certification and net-zero energy status.

When Jim met with Doug Woods and others in the Management Committee in the Fall of 2010, the goal of the meeting was to download everything that had happened with the original young professionals' efforts and the beta-project in San Diego.

2011

Included in our message was two unique perspectives on ideation: one from Steven Johnson, "Where Good Ideas Come From", and another from Hyundai's Superbowl Commercial in 2011.

Starting in 2011, the Innovation Team’s primary challenge was changing the way people thought about innovation.

2012

Project Lion was recently featured at the Trimble Dimensions conference in Las Vegas in November, 2012 (see video below).

2012: After a year of operation, DPR’s Phoenix office achieves net-zero energy status.

In 2012, our idea budget amounted to $1.2M and were able to invest over $350K in new ideas, technologies and tools.

2013

Currently there are 11 operating Innovation Pods throughout the company and each one has a specific business plan that outlines their regional “Ever Forward” goals for 2013.

2015

2015: DPR surpasses $3 billion in revenue for the first time.
