Drew University company history timeline

1867

Drew was established in 1867 as a seminary with a gift of $250,000 from Daniel Drew, Wall Street financier and steamboat tycoon.

The school was founded in 1867 as Drew Theological Seminary.

Instruction began under the direction of McClintock as both president and professor of practical theology after the first students were admitted in 1867.

1912

Drew began offering graduate-level education in 1912.

1928

Brothers College, later renamed as the "College of Liberal Arts", opened in September 1928 with its first class of 12 students.

1942

Women were first admitted in 1942.

1966

AUGUST 1966 The Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School is incorporated in the State of California as a private, non-profit, educational institution.

1968

OCTOBER 1968 Mitchell Spellman, MD, PhD, begins his tenure as the founding Executive Dean of the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School.

1969

NOVEMBER 1969 First department chairman is appointed.

1970

JANUARY 1970 Formal opening of the offices of the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School and the Watts-Willowbrook Regional Medical Program (RMP) at 120th St and Compton Avenue.

1971

JULY 1971 First contract between Los Angeles County and the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School is agreed to for provision of health care and education services at King Hospital.

1972

JUNE 1972 Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School hosts its first Open House.

1973

JUNE 1973 The MEDEX Physician Assistant Program of the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School, the first such training program in California, graduates its first class of 21 students.

1974

JUNE 1974 Dedication of the Doctor Julius W. Hill Intern and Resident Physician Building, named after the founder of the Golden State Medical Association and former member of the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School Board of Directors.

JUNE 1974 The Johnnie Tillmon Child Care Center opens as a family day care center.

1977

MAY 1977 Publication of the Heller Committee Report by the UC Board of Regents, which described a proposed preclinical/clinical undergraduate medical education program between UCLA Medical School and Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School.

DECEMBER 1977 Doctor Mitchell Spellman ends his tenure as founding Dean; leaves to become Dean, Medical Services, at Harvard University Medical School.

1978

MAY 1978 The UC Board of Regents votes to approve a Memorandum of Understanding that establishes the Drew/UCLA Undergraduate Medical Education Program for the MD degree.

1979

AUGUST 1979 M. Alfred Haynes, MD, MPH, is formally inaugurated as the Dean of Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School in traditional cap and gown faculty exercises.

1980

MAY 1980 The Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School Foundation is incorporated.

1981

MAY 1981 The $20-million Augustus F. Hawkins Mental Health Building, named after political leader of Watts who became California's first African-American elected to the United States Congress, is dedicated.

1984

FEBRARY 1984 The Clinical Sciences Research Facility is established in the Augustus F. Hawkins Building.

1987

APRIL 1987 Under the leadership of Walter F. Leavell, MD, President, the school's name is changed to Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science to reflect its expanded academic role and identity, and the accreditation process is initiated.

OCTOBER 1987 W. Benton Boone, MD, MS, is elected Chairman of the Board of Directors.

1999

A gift of $5 million from Trustee Barbara Morris Caspersen G’91 and her husband, Finn, in 1999 resulted in a new name for the school: the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies.

2005

JULY 2005 Thomas T. Yoshikawa, MD, is appointed Provost, Chief Operating Officer and Acting President.

After Kean's retirement, the trustees selected Robert Weisbuch, former president of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, as Drew's eleventh president in 2005.

2010

SEPTEMBER 2010 M. Roy Wilson, MD, MS, is named Acting President, CEO and Chairman, Board of Trustees.

2012

DECEMBER 2012 Marvin O’Quinn, MPH, is named Chairman, Board of Trustees.

2014

FEBRARY 2014 Official bust unveiling is held for Mervyn M. Dymally, PhD.

2016

2016 CDU celebrates its 50th anniversary with a series of on- and off-campus events.

2017

Heather's dissertation uses a dataset comprised of students' tweets and blog posts publicly created for my course in spring 2017 to explore the influence of social media on students’ understandings of and articulations of history.

2020

In July, the school's search committee announced the appointment of Thomas J. Schwarz as interim president, beginning on August 1, 2020.
