BAE Systems drilling machine operator job description
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Sets-up and operates manual machine shop equipment including self-feed drills, cordless drills, routers, and grinders on a variety of metals. Use drill and machining fixtures and perform hand layout based off of machining blueprints when fixtures are unavailable. Installs various types of machining inserts including heli-coils and keenserts. Working knowledge of portable machining and drill and tap standards are required.
Various sizes and types of drills (radial, multi-spindle), mills, broaching and gear hob equipment, grinders (cylindrical and surface), fixtures, clamps, perishable tooling, sanders, various hand tools (i.e. wrenches, pliers etc.), measuring and test equipment (i.e. Versa and height gauges), personal computer and/or other data acquisition devices (i.e. bar-code and datamyte). Tools include material movement equipment cranes, jib and overhead (i.e. pendulum or radio controlled), vacuum lift equipment, manipulators and hand trucks, ladders, platforms and mobile hi-lifts.
MATERIALS:
Government and customer furnished, purchased and plant produced parts/sub assemblies such as aluminum and steel plates, structural shapes, castings, forgings, bar stock, tubing and pipe.
SOURCE OF SUPERVISION:
Process Supervisor, Assistant Process Supervisor or may be directed by Lead Person or Self-Directed Work Team.

WORKING PROCEDURE:
Receives instructions and work orders from Process Supervisor, Assistant Process Supervisor, Lead Person or Self-Directed Work Team.
Handles material to and from work area, using jib or overhead cranes or other material handling equipment, as required.
Refers to drawings, sketches, manuals, books, charts, military specifications and process sheets.
Submits first piece to Inspection as required. Ensures specification conformance of product, process and workmanship and documents findings on personal computers and/or other data acquisition devices as required.
Performs checks and/or adjustments to processes as required to maintain tolerances.
Performs de-burring operations with miscellaneous hand tools.
Performs checks on equipment to maintain efficient and safe operations and reports any deficiencies.
Checks fluid levels and adds coolant as required. Reports low oil levels.
Keeps work area safe and clean.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
* High School diploma or equivalent
* Able to work 2nd shift (3:00pm- 11:30pm)
* Ability to use drills, taps, grinders, saws and standard measurement equipment
* Requires knowledge of drilling, tapping, tap drill selection, thread measurement and saw operation
* Ability to operate various types of drill presses & hand drills. Ability to utilize fixtures for drill processes
* Ability to Operate grinding equipment Ability to use thread gauging equipment Ability to read and understand work instructions and blue prints that depict standard machining text. Ability to set up fixtures per instructions
* Ability to use hand tools (hammers , punches, wrenches, clamps, etc.)
