Drivetrain company history timeline

1990

Down tube shifters seem retro and romantic, but if you were riding bikes before 1990 — meaning you were using down tube shifters simply because there was no other choice — you know just how much Shimano Total Integration (STI) changed the game.

1991

In 1991, the company opened its second plant, in Bethany, OK, to rebuild General Motors transmission assemblies and electromechanical products.

1992

In 1992, the French company introduced the first hard-wired consumer electronic shifting system, called Zap.

1994

In 1994, while, the company was starting work at 9901 Reno Avenue in Oklahoma City, Fred Jones was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.

Our current leadership team purchased the business in 1994.

1996

In 1996, Fred Jones Manufacturing Company would become the first Oklahoma company to receive the “Big Three” automakers quality certification, the prestigious designation of QS-9000.

1996 partnered with a large manufacturing company to enhance our service offerings

1997

In 1997, Fred Jones Manufacturing Company purchased its U.K. facility and the remanufacturing section of Fred Jones Manufacturing was renamed Autocraft Industries.

1998

By 1998, Autocraft Industries was purchased by Aftermarket Technology Corporation.

1999

That turned out to be Zap’s fatal flaw, and in 1999, Mavic introduced a supposedly more refined group called Mektronic, which also happened to be wireless.

2003

In 2003, the company began remanufacturing transmissions for Honda.

2004

2004 Drivetrain added Fed Ex to the client list and started manufacturing drivelines for Telma Retarder

2005

2005 started working with Cummins Incorporated on multiple re-power projects

2006

In 2006, Autocraft Industries won a new 6 speed FWD transmission contract with GM and Ford.

2007

When VeloNews caught up with Evett in 2007 for an article on his prototype shifters, he told the story of a lot of doors knocked on, but not many answered.

2008

ATC Drivetrain, Inc got its name in 2008 when Aaron’s Automotive and Autocraft Industries (including Autocraft Industries UK) were renamed.

2009

Shimano’s Di2, which debuted in 2009, may have popularized the idea of electronic groups, but it wasn’t the first on the market.

In 2009, the company succeeded where Mavic had failed, in part by not being wedded to the idea of a wireless setup.

2011

Around the same time, Campagnolo was developing Electronic Power Shift, or EPS, which it debuted in 2011, the same year Shimano released its Ultegra Di2 group.

2012

The front derailleur opened up more gear combinations for riders tackling varied terrain and, just like that, it became a standard component in almost all drivetrains until 2012, when SRAM ushered in the “one-by” era.

2016

2016 Became an Eaton Authorized Rebuilder and started manufacturing drivelines for Lightning Hybrids

2019

In May, 2019 ATC acquired ATP Automotive Transmission Remanufacturing Specialists Limited, ATP Electronic Developments Limited and ATP Holidings USA, LLC (collectively “ATP”) from ATP’s founder Alan Smart.

In October, 2019 ATC launched a joint venture with Luwote (Zhangjiagang) Power Remanufacturing Technology Co., Ltd. (“Luwote”) in Zhangjiagang, China.

2020

2020 to Present undertook expansion into a broader national market

2021

In August 2021, ATC acquired the UK’s leading heavy commercial drivetrain remanufacturer, HL Smith Transmissions.
