Demonstrate Competence:
The Dryer Operator is in charge of production for the shift and job responsibilities change as the flow of the operation and conditions within the plant change. It is his/her duty to see that the production levels are maintained at their highest level without damaging any equipment while maintaining a superior quality product, and a safe workplace. At no time should the Dryer Operator run the plant outside of his/her comfort zone. While on duty it is the Dryer Operators responsibility to make sure that all departments (bagging, forklift operators, loader operators, pellet mill operators and custodians) are working safely and efficiently. As a Dryer Operator, you can expect to be asked questions from all departments of the operation. You should familiarize yourself with all procedures and be familiar with the job descriptions in each department. See that 3 ash tests are completed in a 12-hour shift. See that your Pellet Mill Operator completes his/her assignments each day. (See Mill Operators Routines & Responsibilities). Assist Pellet Mill Operator whenever possible. This may include changing a roll, die, etc.
Inspections and Maintenance:
Always keep production levels at the highest level possible without jeopardizing SAFETY, plant equipment, or quality. Make sure that all plant employees remain focused on their responsibilities while at the same time, maintaining a safe work environment. Make sure that the daily plant log sheets are completed for your shift and all requested information is filled out including any and all maintenance or safety issues. These samples must be done EVERY 30 minutes. Check pellet for excessive wood chunks. If chucks are found in Pellets shutdown and find cause. If Pellets are too long/short make necessary equipment adjustments. Lignetics prides itself on quality. To maintain a premium grade pellet, the pellet weight must be between 40 and 46 pounds per cubic foot (PPCF). Normally a 42.5pound pellet is the best. A visual inspection of the pellets is also completed while conducting a weight check. The pellets must test out at less than .80 to 1.0 percent ash by weight. Anything higher does not meet Lignetics standards. An ash test is conducted on a bagged pellet sample every 70 tons. The majority of a grab sample must be ¾ in length. This does not mean that a few pellets over or under will make a bad product. We simply need to have the majority of the pellets between these parameters. In order to meet premium grade, the fines content cannot be over 1 %. As long? as the equipment is being maintained this should be easily achieved. Obviously, the less fines the better. Keep in mind some fines will be generated during shipment.
Communication and Teamwork:
Maintain good communications between your shift and the one that follows so that everyone understands what problems may arise. Report all incidents no matter how minor to Plant Manager. This means any equipment failures, potential equipment failures, all injuries, and all safety issues. Report all pellet quality issues to the Quality Control Supervisor. Responsible for assisting other production areas, as needed. Move and wrap completed products. Assist the Shift Leads to start and stop the pellet mills. Any other duties as assigned.
