The Emergency Department at Duke University Hospital is comprised of 81 total beds including 18 Pediatric beds/36 Adult Monitored beds/8 Psychiatric beds/11 Evaluation beds/3 Consult beds/4 Triage beds/1 Sexual Assault Examiner Room/ and a dedicated central telemetry station . Our team is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time.
The Paramedic functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team providing direct patient care. The Paramedic performs a variety of activities across various practices settings and patient populations in accordance with the Paramedic scope of practice as defined by the North Carolina Medical Board and with the approval of the practice setting Medical Director.
Work Hours & Shifts:
Full time - 36 hours per week: 3 - 12 hour shifts
Shifts available: 7a-7p or 7p-7a
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Responsible for providing direct patient care in accordance with the Paramedic scope of practice as defined by the North Carolina Medical Board under the medical oversight of the Medical Director of the practice setting where the individual will function.
* Assists clinical staff in the evaluation, treatment and care of patients. Obtains pertinent history and performs a physical examination. Performs technical procedures as delegated.
* Monitors patients and maintains records using patient monitoring system and electronic health records. Documents patients' status, delivery of care and evaluation of the patients' response to care according to specific procedures and established protocols.
* Documents and maintains an informative and accurate medical record to initiate charges for each patient treated.
* Communicates in a professional manner essential information to all appropriate members of the healthcare team to promote sharing of information throughout the continuum of care.
* Operates extensive medical and mechanical equipment in the hospital and transport environment. Ensures all medical equipment is functioning; restocks medical supplies as needed.
* Provides and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for the patients, visitors, and staff. Properly disposes of and handles as applicable, sharps, soiled materials, and linens and disinfects area in accordance with policy and policy as applicable. Properly uses PPE when in contact with patients, soiled utility, hazardous materials in accordance with policy.
* Act as preceptor and support the development of other staff and formal learners.
* Participate in the identification of clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and in performance improvement activities. Supports an environment of evidence-based practice/research/quality improvement initiatives
* Maintain certifications and clinical skills.
* Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Successful completion of an NCOEMS approved Paramedic Course or a United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) centered course or similar approved Paramedic Course.
Experience
Level I - Paramedic One year experience in relevant clinical areas required, Paramedic experience preferred. Level II - Life Flight Advanced Life Support Paramedic One year ALS Paramedic experience required, preferred two to three years prehospital experience with a moderate call volume (>15,000 calls/year) 911 agency. Level III - Life Flight Critical Care Paramedic Minimum of three years and current ALS experience as a Paramedic in emergency setting with a moderate to high call volume 911 agency (20,000 to 35,000 calls/year) Obtain FP-C within 2 years of hire. Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
Current certification as a North Carolina Paramedic required for all Level I and Level II levels. BLS, ACLS, and PALS required. (Must obtain within 6months if working in a hospital based department) Current trauma course preferred: PHTLS, BTLS or ITLS Applies to Life Flight Paramedic only BLS, ACLS, and PALS, required. Duke University Health System's Life Flight team supports over 20 critical care procedures independently. The patient population is 22-23 week gestation neonates to geriatric (all ages). In this department you work with interdisciplinary teams including, Basic Life Support EMT's, single provider ALS Paramedic, Clinical Nurses, Respiratory Therapist (Neo/Peds team) and Critical Care Paramedics.
Job Summary:
As a EMT with Duke University Health System, you will make providing service your priority while caring for the whole person in a patient-centered atmosphere. The EMT Driver will perform a variety of activities associated with the Life Flight/ Life Care Critical Care Transport service to include operation of the Life Care Critical Care Transport ambulance and medical support systems, and assist with operations of associated satellite base and ongoing continuing education outreach program.
* Responsible for minor repairs to the unit to include: changing light bulbs, replenishing fluids, tightening nuts and bolts, inspecting tires, etc.
* Responsible for daily maintenance including fueling and cleaning of vehicle.
* Responsible for reporting minor and major repair needs to the site specific Clinical Operations Director.
* Responsible for assisting nursing staff with patient care as requested to include loading and unloading operation of commonly used equipment and providing family members with information about and directions to Duke.
* Responsible for replenishing medical air and oxygen and medical supplies used during transport.
* Knowledge of streets and highways within the response area of the mobile intensive care unit.

Delivers emergency and critical care, such as rapid sequence induction, medication assisted intubation, surgical airway, management of thoracostomy tubes, ability to manage central lines, blood product infusion, continuous temperature management, fetal heart monitoring, and central line placement, in accordance with protocols under UNC Hospitals Critical Care Transport Medical Direction
9. Participates in plan of care for critical patients and require transport from referring institutions as well as using advanced medications to control blood pressure, heart rate, arrhythmias, and sedation.

The Emergency Department is a designated Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center serving as North Carolina's primary referral hospital as well as serving communities in Orange County. The staff collaboratively operate as a unified team across two distinct units- the Main ED (adults) and the Pediatric ED (children)-providing care for patients of all ages from neonates to geriatrics. The UNC REX Emergency Department is a 54-bed facility equipped to provide comprehensive emergency care for a wide range of medical needs. The RN assigned to the 16-bed Emergency Department at the Hillsborough Campus delivers direct and indirect care for patients presenting with minor illnesses/ injuries to critical/ trauma injuries. Critical/traumatic injuries may require stabilization and potential transport to the Main ED / Trauma Level 1 Center at UNC Medical Center. This diverse environment in a community hospital setting contributes to a challenging and rewarding clinical environment for nurses and other members of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team.
This Emergency Department has been accredited by the American College of Emergency Medicine as a Level 2 Geriatric Emergency Department and was the first in North Carolina to receive this designation.
