Dunlop Manufacturing company history timeline

1965

Jim Dunlop started the Dunlop Manufacturing company in 1965 in Benicia, California, and followed his dream to provide quality products for fellow musicians.

1981

In 1981, however, the company sold its holdings there to Malaysian investors.

1982

In 1982 Dunlop sold a large portion of its European tire operations to Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Inc., of Japan—an associate company and former Dunlop subsidiary.

1984

In 1984 came the consolidation of Dunlop’s European and US tire operations with its Japanese business, as part of the Sumitomo group.

1985

BTR PLC, an industrial holding company, acquired Dunlop in 1985, selling off Dunlop’s American tire company.

1999

In 1999 Sumitomo and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company decided on a global alliance, becoming the world’s biggest tire producer.
