Durham Housing Authority company history timeline

1937

Passage of a substandard housing ordinance which would enable the City to more effectively address the problem of poor housing, consistent with the Housing Act of 1937

1949

William Muirhead, chairman of the Durham Housing Authority, described the history of the Few Gardens project from the date the Authority was appointed by former mayor Dan K. Edwards in October, 1949.

In 1949, Mayor Daniel K. Edwards appointed a group of local citizens to serve on an ad hoc committee to review the matter of substandard housing in Durham.

DHA's history began with the Federal Housing Act of 1949, which created three Federally funded programs:

1950

1954

Title I: Federal funding for "slum clearance" in American cities, which would come to be known as "Urban Renewal" by the Housing Act of 1954.

1961

The 1961 Housing Act introduced a program which allowed local housing authorities to house individuals on their waiting lists in privately leased units through the mechanism of a voucher which covered the gap between household ability to pay and the market rent.

1965

No significant legislation changed the mechanisms of public housing until the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1965, which created the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a cabinet-level agency to lead with housing.

1974

The Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 created the Section 8 Housing Program to encourage the private sector to construct affordable homes.

2006

In October 2006, the property was sold to Andy Rothschild of Scientific Properties and it was subsequently redeveloped to provide artist studios, apartments, retail, and office space.
