Position Summary

This is a 6-month position that begins June 15. The Fire Specialist/Land Manager (FSLS) will be based at the Conservancy's Wells, Maine office with supporting travel to additional TNC and partner sites including the Brunswick Maine TNC office. They will support the collaborative partners, trained volunteers and seasonal burn crews at as well as engage in preserve management activities outside of prescribed fire timeframes.
The FSLS will assist in directing trained call-when-needed crews comprised of staff, volunteers and partners in Prescribed fire operations which include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, and other tasks as assigned. The FSLS must use safety equipment and maintain a safety-conscious attitude at all times. Tasks may include assisting with preserve management activities such as preparing firebreaks, herbicide application, boundary maintenance, equipment/vehicle maintenance, fence construction/removal, constructing parking areas, meeting with local landowners, assisting with field trips, leading volunteers, biological and easement monitoring, research coordination, timber marking, and other land management activities as needed. Ability to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances is required. On Site Vehicle(s) and Transportation to preserves and work sites will be provided by The Nature Conservancy home unit. Camping in remote locations may be required as part of the job duties.
As part of the FSLS's ongoing professional development, they will be responsible for maintaining current awareness of burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials. In addition, they will build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local communities where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in wildland fire suppression activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state and federal agencies, either as a TNC employee, or as a volunteer or short-term employee of the partner entity . The FSLS may also be asked to represent TNC at meetings with conservation partners.
The FSLS may contribute to monitoring and management efforts such as Ecological Reserve monitoring, invasive species management, and special projects such as contributing to restoration projects on TNC lands. The Field assistant may participate in the maintenance of human use infrastructure, including foot trails, kiosks and wayfinding signage, boundary marking, and will at times interact with the public to furnish information or coordinate with partners.
The ideal candidate will meet or exceed the competencies outlined below. The ideal FSLS candidate will also be capable of writing and updating forest management plans and burn plans. The FSLS will work as part of a small team directed by the Regenal Land Manager/ME Fire Manger responsible for implementing fire management and land stewardship activities across southern/western Maine region.

Lumber Handlers are required to stack lumber by hand. This is a physical position that will require the use of good body mechanics and safe work practices. Good basic math and basic computer skills are needed. You must be physically able to stand, sit, or walk for long periods of time.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Promptly respond to requests for maintenance needs at both the Exeter YMCA and YMCA Hampton Child Care Center.
Responsible for all water systems and adhering to NH Department of Environmental Services (DES) start-up/maintenance/testing programs (seasonal and year-round).
Works closely with the Facilities Director to address and implement a preventative maintenance program for each business unit.
Regularly inspects buildings, grounds, and equipment for unsafe conditions and addressees necessary needs without delay.
Work with supervisors to prioritize requests and workload.
Assist with the development of safety standards and emergency procedures.
Report all needs in a timely manner to ensure that there is adequate supply of equipment and materials to maintain Hampton Center and the branch.
Troubleshoot, evaluate and recommend equipment/service upgrades.
Supervise external vendors and contractors as required.
Prepare and maintain logs and records.
Ensure that the organization is in compliance with all local, state and federal regulations, including required regulatory inspections.
Attend required abuse risk management training.
Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

Explorers Leaders lead campers on daily offsite programs that introduce campers to a variety of activities that focus on recreation and outdoor adventure. Explorers I (X1) participants focus on recreation and comradery with programs to state parks, escape rooms, surfing, beaches and more. Explorers II (X2) participants focus on outdoor adventure activities such as hiking, paddling, climbing, and camping. Explorers II programs include leading both onsite and offsite overnights with campers. Explorers Leaders are responsible for the physical and mental wellbeing of campers and peers. Leaders set a positive example for campers and program partners.
Requirements
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Lead daily offsite field trips for campers entering grades 5th - 9th that focus on recreation and outdoor adventure. Examples include escape rooms, state parks, beaches, escape rooms, paintball, hiking, paddling, rock climbing, camping, and more.
Provide campers with excellent supervision and exercise strong judgement in all circumstances to ensure high levels of safety and program quality.
Model Camp Lincoln's four core values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility for campers and program partners.
Drive camp mini-buses on all trips providing safe transportation and positive environment throughout.
Explorers II programs include one onsite overnight and one offsite overnight camping trip. Leaders are oversee overnight programs to ensure campers safety and wellbeing.
Introduce campers to basic skills in outdoor activities such as proper strokes in paddling, setting up tents for camping, and hiking.
Maintain strict safety protocol on all trips according to Camp Lincoln's policies and industry standards.
Responsible for inspecting all equipment for functionality and safety before each use.
Work alongside Specialty Camp Unit Leader and Assistant Camp Director to finalize trip itineraries, plan meals, program equipment, and transportation.
Coordinate with Specialty Camp Unit Leader to manage petty cash and payments for vendors.
Complete program debrief with campers and Assistant Camp Director at conclusion of programs.
Attend required abuse risk management training.
Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations. Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 21 years old.
Must possess valid driver's license
Must have a clean driving record.
Lifeguard certification preferred. Certification opportunities provided for successful candidates.
