DUST Identity is a company that runs on trust. As a security start-up, DUST Identity strives to provide trust in physical objects by securing a link between the object and its digital records. The company is on a mission to create a world where every product, component, and package comes with a trusted identity.
"From parts in fighter jets to tomatoes in the grocery store, how do we know that products are genuine and produced according to the seller's promises? Identity is the key to trust," said Peter Gillooly, Head Of Strategic Partnerships. "We create trust by providing an unclonable fingerprint for physical things that securely binds objects of any size to their digital records."
The company is headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts right outside of Boston and can be found directly next door to Jack's Abby craft brewery. Plus, it's only a 10-minutes walk for the commuter rail. Last year, the company raised Series A funding that was led by Kleiner Perkins with support from Lockheed Martin and Airbus Ventures. Today, the company is working with some of the largest U.S. government agencies and tech leaders to protect their most critical assets in supply chain and business operations.
Diving Into the Values at DUST Identity
As it's already been established, trust is at the heart of the company. It's the promise that employees make to clients. It's what the DUST Identity culture is built on. Every single team member understands the importance of trust in their work and lives by it. They use trust to challenge each other and themselves every day. In order to secure that trust, employees are in constant collaboration with one another. They come in with grit and a "get it done" attitude. And most important of all, they have respect for their colleagues and work. By building a transparent and candor culture, trust encompasses the company.
The Team at DUST Identity
Dust Off Your Full Potential
Teammates are trusted to come into work every ready to give 110% of their genuine selves every day. Since developers are always working on solving issues of grand scope, it's important that they approach each day with hard work and a high-level of thinking. That's why when DUST Identity goes to hire a new team member, their ambition is what sticks out the most. People who can accomplish big tasks are going to be added to the team.
"When it comes to engineering skills, we specifically look for an appetite for learning and jumping on teaching opportunities," said Jonathan Hodges, VP of Engineering. "Having a diversity of skills and approaches to problems are key. Everyone should bring something unique to the table." These are the people who make up DUST Identity.
Team members depend on open communication among all channels, whether it's with another colleague or senior-level team member. Since the company's customer base includes international brands and government agencies, team members are responsible for delivering macro-level and micro-level results.
"The issues that we're trying to solve require commitment and agility that goes above and beyond the standard requirements of a typical startup," said Hodges.
The team loves building strong bonds outside of the office too. "Our team loves exploring our neighborhood for new food and once a week we have an outing to find a new "hole in the wall," said Suki, Executive Assistant & Office Manager. Within the last couple of years, the company even added an annual team offsite event. The first one was held in a Catskills' lodge and was filled with team building and outdoor activities.
The Culture at DUST Identity
Don't Let Dust Collect on Your Ideas
"Initiative and inquisitiveness. Since joining I've seen a culture that fosters assumption challenging, creative problem solving, and ownership," said Chris Muto, Head Of Cloud Services.
I think anyone who is excited to listen actively to others, engage with and challenge ideas, and drive innovation would thrive at DUST.
The team is constantly trying to challenge the current limits of threading a connection between a physical object its digital identity. Right now, their biggest challenge is adding fresh, new features to the software stack using a modular approach. The company's approach to trusting each employee with ownership of their projects makes this easier to do. At DUST Identity, you'll have complete ownership over one part of the system or one of the processes. This ownership helps make onboarding and collaboration much more effective.
Speaking of onboarding, the new hires have the best job at DUST Identity. From Day 1, they're able to give feedback or divulge new ideas on how to combat new challenges. This way new hires are able to have a fresh perspective on the work rather than getting caught up in the status quo. More importantly, though, the culture at DUST Identity is very much open-minded. Every employee, not just new hires, are encouraged to speak up.
