    We are seeking the immediate hire of a Building Inspector for Orlando, Florida. The person in the role will work under the direction of the Florida Business Unit Manager and is subject to annual performance evaluations. The Inspector will perform technical inspections to enforce compliance with building codes, regulations, and ordinances. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Provides exemplary customer service to all individuals by demonstrating a willingness to be attentive, understanding, and responsive, fair, courteous, as well as respectful, and to actively participate in maintaining a positive customer service environment Inspects commercial, industrial and residential buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations. Inspections include foundation, concrete, steel, masonry, wood construction, framing, plastering, plumbing, heating and electrical installations and a large variety of other complex and routine building system elements. Depending on specific assignment, inspectors may also issue notices for violation upon failed inspections and may be responsible for approving the issuance of building permits. Examines plans and specifications of new construction, additions and alterations to residential, commercial and industrial buildings to determine compliance with the provisions of applicable construction codes, ordinances and regulations. Responds to code related questions from developers, builders, contractors, and/or property owners. Confers with architects, contractors, builders and the public in the field and office; explain and interpret building requirements and restrictions Reads, researches, and objectively explains and interprets building code requirements along with other laws pertaining to regulation of buildings, and tactfully communicate, orally and in writing, with staff and/or clients, while maintaining effective relationships Maintains files and reports regarding inspection and/or plan review activities and findings Attends and participates in meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of building inspection Performs related duties and responsibilities as required Requirements: We will consider any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for this job. Minimum education required: High school graduate or GED. An Associate's degree is preferred (not required). Valid Florida Driver's license. Florida State Standard Inspector License for Building as well as Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP). Knowledge of the Florida Building Code. Knowledge of general office equipment- copier/fax/scanner, phone. Must be able to understand and follow instructions. Ability to work well with others in a collaborative team environment High energy level and able to work in a fast-paced environment. Basic knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, document and database software (MS Office, Excel, Access, Adobe Acrobat). Knowledge of Building Permitting and Plan Review software is preferred. Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to work outdoors and will be exposed to dust and noise. The employee will need to sit, stand, walk, or climb for long periods of time. The employee will need to be able to see details of objects and distinguish between colors and shapes. The employee will need to coordinate movement of several parts of the body, such as arms and legs, while the body is moving. The employee must be able to hear sounds, recognize the difference between sounds, and determine from which direction a sound came. At times, it might be necessary to bend, stretch, twist, or reach out. The employee will be required to always remain alert. SUMMARY OF POSITION: This position is responsible for the inspection, researching, evaluation, and estimation of repairs in addition to the proper coding of and preparation of Billing Repair Card estimates & documentation required to maintain company, lessee, and customer fleets. NATURE AND SCOPE: This position reports to the Quality Assurance Manager, who in turn reports to the Plant Manager/ Manager of Write-Up Processes/Director of Quality Assurance The main responsibility of the incumbent is to review any and all documentation relating to the car shopping, to perform a thorough inspection of the car identifying defects/repairs, to prepare a detailed Billing Repair Card Estimate identifying the required repairs, & to prepare all needed inspection documentation. This is accomplished through the performance of a thorough inspection of the car resulting in the detection of items in need of repair and conditions not meeting specific shopping requirements. After defects/repairs are noted, the incumbent is responsible for the accurate estimation of repairs, as well as the preparation of all other necessary documents needed in conjunction with the repairs. All billing repair card codes, labor hours, & repair materials needed must be estimated and properly coded. The incumbent performs final inspections as required. In order to perform inspection activities, the incumbent must be trained in various inspection processes per FRA regulations. This training is extensive and can cover many areas/processes. He/she must possess a working knowledge of current Fleet Repair Standards, AAR & FRA regulations, and keep up-to-date on continually emerging changes/additions to these standards and regulations. He/she must be able to interpret standards, regulations and shopping instructions as they apply to the repair process. In addition to inspection of cars, the incumbent must identify repairs to be made and thoroughly understand the repair processes he/she is recommending. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring write-ups are performed in a timely and accurate manner, instructions for repairs are clear, and that final inspections reveal all required work was performed in a quality manner. The incumbent must also be able to identify possible claims the company may have against the lessee, i.e., corrosion, loading rack damage, etc. and follow through to an equitable solution. To effectively perform in this regard, the incumbent may interface with railroads, and various Union Tank Car Marketing areas on a daily basis with regard to his/her inspection findings. In performing all of his/her duties and responsibilities, the Write-Up Inspector works alone and uses his/her own judgment and discretion, unless something is highly unusual or unprecedented. It is important that inspections and estimates are handled quickly, thoroughly and accurately. Improper or inadequate handling of write-ups, repairs and claims could cause Union Tank Car Company to lose a great deal of money as well as customer satisfaction. The incumbent works to meet internal and external customer expectations at all times by fully applying oneself to the task involved, preventing errors, and developing and implementing personal quality improvement projects. In addition, the incumbent is required to understand the Responsible Care Management System and actively participate in activities outlined therein. SKILLS/ABILITIES: Enter tank cars via a manway opening approximately 20 inches in diameter. Be able to tolerate heights, confined spaces, & working through periods of inclement weather. Be willing and able to wear safety equipment such as safety shoes, hard hats, air fed respirators, body harnesses, and safety glasses. Possess reading and comprehension skills associated with Fleet Repair Standards, Governing Regulations, drawings, and catalogs. General mechanical aptitude and ability to use railroad gauges, testing techniques, & test equipment necessary for rail car inspections. Have vision correctable to 20/20 for inspection activities. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS: HS Diploma required with a minimum of 3 - 5 years' relevant work experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Strong background knowledge of AAR and FRA rule administration. Understanding of tank car design, components and regulatory requirements. The incumbent must have detailed knowledge of inspection procedures; additional training in inspection processes will be required. In addition, this position requires a working knowledge of computers, including familiarity with the AS400, Lotus Notes, and Microsoft Office software packages. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Researches & inspects incoming cars for defects and/or repairs required in accordance with governing regulations, repair standards, project letters, and customer specifications. Prepares and completes all paperwork required in conjunction with write-up of needed repairs ensuring labor and material estimates and proper coding of same. Identifies repairs and assigns responsibility in accordance with UTC policies and pricing matrices to ensure estimate correctness, consistency, and RBU profitability. Interfaces on a daily basis with railroads, lessees, outside inspectors, and various marketing groups with regard to inspection findings to expedite the repair process.
