Overview This role will be responsible for the oversight and execution of detailed design for high-voltage substations (up to 500 kV), including physical layout, equipment specifications, grounding, protection and control, and construction support. Responsibilities Lead and perform the complete design of substation projects including: General arrangement and equipment layout drawings Grounding, lighting, conduit and cable plans Control building layouts AC/DC auxiliary systems Bill of Materials and material specifications One-line, three-line, and wiring diagrams Serve as the primary technical point of contact for clients, project managers, and internal teams. Perform and check design calculations for short-circuit forces, ampacity, grounding, lightning protection, and voltage drop. Review and approve design packages prepared by junior engineers and designers. Prepare equipment specifications and procurement documents for major substation components (power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, instrument transformers, protection panels). Provide engineering support during procurement, fabrication, and construction. Develop and enforce project design standards, quality procedures, and best practices. Mentor and train junior engineering staff. Support proposals and business development by developing scope, schedule, and budget estimates. Maintain compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements (NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE). Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Power emphasis preferred) or related engineering discipline. Minimum 8 years of experience in substation physical design engineering. Proficiency with substation design tools and software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bentley Substation, or similar). Working knowledge of P&C design fundamentals and schematics. Demonstrated ability to lead project design teams and review deliverables for accuracy and compliance. Strong understanding of relevant codes and standards (NESC, IEEE, NEC). Excellent communication skills and ability to coordinate with clients, utilities, and construction contractors. Preferred Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Georgia or ability to obtain within 12 months. Experience with 230 kV-500 kV substations and complex greenfield/brownfield projects. Proficiency in grounding analysis software (CDEGS, WinIGS) and mechanical/electrical calculation tools. Experience with protection and control wiring design and relay panel layouts.
