Earth Friendly Products company history timeline

1978

Released by the German government in 1978, the label is awarded to various products and services that are deemed environment-friendly by an independent panel of relevant stakeholders. (Environmental experts, trade union representatives, NGOs, etc.)

1988

Published in 1988 and selling over 1 million copies, it was the first book of its kind to focus on green consumer choices.

1990

1990 With an idea, a garage, and a few grants to write a business plan, Kent and Steve Savage founded Eco-Products on October 1, 1990.

In 1990, McDonald’s finally announced that it was moving to paper-based packaging.

1993

A multi-stakeholder partnership between NGOs and concerned industrialists developed the first sustainable forest management standard called the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in 1993.

1993 The demand for recycled products was consistent and many competitors already offered similar products made from recycled materials, so our founders shifted the business toward foodservice disposables and janitorial supplies.

2003

2003 The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) was founded.

Since 2003, the company has grown its manufacturing capacity in California from 8,000 square feet to 125,000 square feet.

2004

2004 Eco-Products continued to grow more rapidly, expanding our line of foodservice items and enjoying an increasing growth rate for a small company.

2007

2007 The GreenStripe® cup was born! Eco-Products started making our own products, under our own label, using a new technology that replaced traditional petroleum-based plastic with "corn plastic" or PLA. The result was new and unique in the marketplace.

2009

2009 Eco-Products introduced our Evolution World™ Hot Cup line, the first 24% post-consumer recycled fiber hot cup on the market.

2012

2012 Eco-Products is acquired by The Waddington Group.

In 2012, the company scored a partnership with Disney.

2013

And with international sales making up 13% of its business, the company in 2013 opened a global sales office in Athens, Greece.

2014

The company also instituted a higher minimum wage — $17 an hour — one of Vlahakis’ final wishes before he died in 2014.
