East Tennessee State University company history timeline
The university opened in 1911 as East Tennessee State Normal School.
ETSU was founded as East Tennessee State Normal School in 1911 to educate teachers; the K-12 training school, called University School, operates to this day.
The school’s first yearbook, “Old Hickory” was published in 1919.
The first football team was fielded in 1920.
Athletic relations with Milligan College reestablished after 1922 dispute
In 1922, the first gymnasium was constructed.
Howard Johnson Field (also known as Cardinal Park), is home to the Buccaneers’ baseball team and was built in 1923.
In 1923, the school’s first newspaper, “Chalkline,” was published.
In 1925, the Normal School changed its name to the East Tennessee State Teachers College and Doctor Charles C. Sherrod was inaugurated as the second president of East Tennessee State.
Old gymnasium (built in 1928) moved to become part of Mathes Hall (music and military science)
By 1930, the school's name had changed again to East Tennessee State Teacher's College, Johnson City.
In 1943, East Tennessee State Teacher's College was expanded into a college with a range of liberal arts offerings, becoming East Tennessee State College.
East Tennessee State adopts rules of compliance to the 1954 United States Supreme Court ruling against racial segregation
ETSC cagers win George Mikan Award; named “most improved” NCAA club for 1958-59 season
The college became East Tennessee State University in 1963, adopting the name it holds today.
ETSU adopts a new logo featuring a mountain range over the initials ETSU in Andover typeface, the work of 1973 art alumnus Richard D. Maxey
The medical college was created by the state legislature in 1974.

ETSU announced plans to open a College of Pharmacy in 2005, rapidly receiving local support to secure the approval.
The Quillen College of Medicine is a fully accredited medical school, and a College of Pharmacy will open in 2006.
In late 2009, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and the Tennessee Board of Regents authorized the formation of a Ph.D. program in Sport Physiology and Performance.
Full accreditation was granted in June 2010, shortly after the first class of the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy graduated.
