Eastchester EMS history

Over several months, they recruited other residents and eventually procured a 1956 Cadillac ambulance donated by the Mt.

The Eastchester Historical Society is a not-for-profit group established in 1958 to further the understanding and appreciation of the history of Eastchester and the Villages of Tuckahoe and Bronxville New York.

In 1966 the Eastchester Fire Department constructed a new addition to accommodate EVAC’s vehicles and members.

The Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps (SVAC) was founded in 1970 by a group of concerned citizens who joined together with a goal to provide improved emergency services for the Scarsdale community.

Initial fundraising and recruitment campaigns were highly successful and, by 1971, SVAC had enrolled more than 30 people to support emergency services in the Village.

In 1984, EVAC began a massive fundraising campaign to support the construction of a new building of our own.

On December 6, 1986, EVAC broke ground on what was to become their new state of the art headquarters.

Four years later, on October 21, 1990, EVAC officially opened its new headquarters for operations.

Shortly after, in May of 1991, EVAC earned the distinction of being a New York State Department of Health Ambulance Service.

Anson J. Augustine has been a member of EVAC since September 1993, when he joined through the Senior Service Program at Iona Preparatory School.

In July of 1995, EVAC implemented its Advanced Life Support (ALS) program, which provided an around the clock staffed Paramedic responsible for responding to all calls and triaging patients to determine the appropriate treatment needed.

Another major milestone for EVAC occurred in 2005 when all medical emergencies started to be dispatched by Westchester County’s Department of Emergency Services, known as 60-Control.

The new building, which opened in February 2009, provides state of the art medical equipment, two ambulance bays, sleeping quarters for ten people, an oxygen filling system, a working kitchen, squad room and training space.

Lieutenant Balaez joined EVAC in 2014.

In 2016, due to the high volume of mutual aid into the north end of New Rochelle, SVAC was asked by the City of New Rochelle to take the area north of Stratton Road as part of its primary response area.

In 2017, with the permission of the Village Manager and then-Mayor Jon Mark, Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps officially took over the area.
