Eastern Oklahoma State College company history timeline

1908

Oklahoma's first state legislature established the college on May 26, 1908, as the Oklahoma School of Mines and Metallurgy.

1912

The first graduates received diplomas in 1912.

1920

Although closed during World War I, the school reopened in 1920 with trade and industrial education added to the curriculum.

1927

Then in 1927, the school won a long overdue name change to Eastern Oklahoma State College and with the change came an added mission of pre-college level instruction.

In 1927 the name was changed to Eastern Oklahoma College, and the mining programs were gradually phased out.

1972

In 1972, it was renamed as the Eastern Oklahoma State College, with its own governing board.

Finally, in 1972, the legislature settled on the name Eastern Oklahoma State College and created a separate board to govern the institution.

1994

It first offered distance learning courses in 1994.

1998

In fall 1998 Eastern's branch campus at McAlester, the Wanda Bass Higher Education Center, opened.
